After graduating high school, Donnie proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force earning the rank of Sargent and then continued his service with the North Carolina Air National Guard, serving a total of 35 years with both. After his service, Donnie spent his career working in maintenance in the aviation industry. More recently, at the Stanly County Airport. I work at Porkys in China Grove. Mr Cook would come to the takeout window and we would always chat. I could tell he was a good man and always enjoyed chatting with him. I’m going to miss him as I know there will be an empty spot in the family. My condolences.

Donnie and I was second cousins. His father was my grandfather brother. We would visit the family when we were young children and play jacks. It was years later when I reconnected with Donnie. We were both in the Air Force stationed in SEA. I was a nurse.
Donnie found me and we spent several fun filled lunches at the quad. I'd bring lunch from the snack bar and he would share stories about the family. It was a comfort when your away from those you love to have the opportunity to share time with family. As with life he returned to the states 6 months before me and again we lost contact. My deepest condolences to his passing. My prayers are with you and all the family.

Donnie and I worked together for several years at the Guard Base.
It was always a lot of fun working with him. He was a truly expert on fuel trucks and taught me a lot. He and I drove an old wrecker to Savannah for training one time and it was noisy but Donnie made it seem as if we were in luxury vehicle, at least for a few minutes. I will truly miss him but I will always keep his memories with me.

Rode in a vanpool to the Air Guard Base for many years with Donnie. He was always upbeat, and provided a lot of entertainment as we spent our time commuting to Charlotte. So sorry for your loss. He was certainly a special fellow to all who knew him. It will be my honor to escort Donnie to the Salisbury National Cemetery on Wednesday as part of the Patriot Guard Riders. There we will stand with our American flags as he receives the military honors he so richly deserves. RIP Paw Paw.

I would like to send prayers of warmth and comfort to Donnie's family. I worked with Donnie in 2017 at the Stanly Airport. He was a true blessing to work with, and I really enjoyed talking to him. He always had a piece of wisdom to talk about, and he is someone who has remained in my thoughts to this day.

Peace and blessings,

Oh how this hurts! I worked with Donnie "Paw Paw" for 19 years at the Airport but more than that he was my friend for even longer. He was one of those people that you know in your heart you will always remember. I have enjoyed hearing from his family since his passing about how much he was loved by all of them and I assured them he was loved probably just about as much by his airport and NCANG family. He never met a stranger and he always had a way of making you feel like he really cared about hearing about your family as much as he liked to talk about his family. And yes he sure liked to talk. I love you Paw-Paw and I will miss you forever.

I have been flying out of Stanly County Airport for more than 30 years. Since Donnie "Paw Paw" has been working at the airport I have had the pleasure of his stories, smiles, and getting know him over the last years. He was Always kind and Happy and I will personally miss him there to help me with fueling my airplane or simply just hearing about his life. May god bless the family and know he will be missed greatly.
