

China Grove-Hubert Lee Patterson, 91, passed away Wednesday afternoon, April 9, 2014, at the Glenn A. Kiser Hospice House. Born in Rowan County on June 27, 1922, Hubert was a son of the late Robert Lee and Carrie Sloop Patterson. A 1940 graduate of China Grove High, he was in the first draft selection, and honorably served his country with the US Army during WWII. A member of the famous 88th Division Blue Devils, he was a radio technician, operating Morse code while serving in Northern Africa and Italy. Following his army service, he returned to his father's family farm. Mr. Patterson and his brother, Leonard, operated Patterson Farms, raising tomatoes and small crops. A very mechanically gifted man, he could fix anything. Mr. Patterson loved his wife and family, and enjoyed reading, studying history and nature. He also appreciated and enjoyed listening to classical music, which he was introduced to during the war in Europe. A life long member of Lutheran Chapel Church, he had been a member of the church choir, council, Sunday school teacher and was life member of WELCA auxiliary.
Family members left to cherish his memory are his wife, Kathleen Weaver Patterson, who he married May 16, 1948: his daughters, Kathy Oliver (David) of Gastonia, Denise Littlefield (Larry) of Statesville and Linda Haigler (Tom) of Welcome; his brothers, Leonard Patterson of China Grove and Emmett Patterson of Wadesboro; his sisters, Mabel Brown of Kannapolis, Ollie McKnight of China Grove and Alice Bittenger of Greensboro; his grandchildren, Matthew Oliver of Asheville, Christopher Littlefield (Kellie) of South Charleston. W VA and Carrie Hillman (Corey) of Greensboro, and his great grandson, Cooper Littlefield.
The family will receive friends Saturday from 6:00-8:00 PM at Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home in China Grove. Funeral services to celebrate and remember the life of Mr. Patterson will begin at 2:30 Sunday, April 13, 2014, at Lutheran Chapel Church, conducted by the Rev. William Connelly, pastor. Burial will follow in the church cemetery , with military graveside honors by the Rowan County and NC National Guard Honor Guards.
