Phyllis Ernestine Mason Sides, 89, of Salisbury, loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and so much more to so many, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday, June 4, 2021, surrounded by two of her loving granddaughters, Melonie Willis and Tammy Wilhite. Born December 13, 1931, in Valley Falls, SC, she was the daughter of the late Nathan Walls Mason and Bertha Beatrice Taylor Mason. In addition to her parents, her husband of 43 years, James B. Sides, Sr. her sisters Della Viola Skipper, Mary Joann Hiatt and Martha Alice Mason and a granddaughter, Pamela Christine Sides and a grandson, James Douglas Dills all preceded her in death. Mrs. Sides was educated in the Valley Falls schools.
In later life, she graduated from Salisbury Business School and then completed numerous typing, bookkeeping, accounting and computer courses at RCCC in Salisbury, NC. Her working career was spent as a bookkeeper at Roses Stores and as a computer operator at Proctor Chemical Company in Salisbury, NC.
Mrs. Sides was an avid arts and crafts creator, along with her sister Joann Hiatt, and they sold their works at various craft shows all over North Carolina. Mrs. Sides was an accomplished seamstress and sewed and repaired clothing for the entire Sides family, while also making the wedding dress for her granddaughter, Latawnia Sides. She also had a passion for working crossword puzzles and greatly enjoyed piecing together the genealogy of her family. She was a longtime member of the Red Hat Society. Mrs. Sides loved to travel and over the years sponsored numerous trips stateside and abroad for her children and herself, visiting Italy, Rome, Paris, Amsterdam, Egypt, Israel, Texas, New York, Canada, Arizona, Grand Canyon, and Washington State to include Mt. Rainier and Mt. St. Helens, creating memories never to be forgotten by all those who accompanied her.
Mrs. Sides was a member of Gospel Light Baptist Church and loved her church family dearly. She had a dry wit about her and loved to pick at certain members from time to time. She was known to give as good as she got. For many years she helped in the toddlers Sunday School Class until her health began to fail.
Those left to cherish her memory are her brother, Eric Bruce Mason, wife Darlene and daughter, Jennifer Leigh Mason; her children, Billy Lamar Sides and wife Claudia; James Blanchard Sides, Jr. and wife, Linda and Martha Karen Sides, all of Salisbury. She also leaves behind her grandchildren, Latawnia Michelle Sides, Nathan Todd Sides, Tamara Elaine Dills Wilhite, Melonie Suzanne Willis, Brian Ashley Sides and great-grandchildren, Coen Adler Sides, Bergen Caswell Sides, Alessan Rebekah Wilhite, Camden Eva Leanore Wilhite, Carrington Sides Willis, Kaleb Austin Sides, Owen Nickolas Sides, Meah Christine Sides, and Ellie Brianne Sides; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visitation and Service: Services will be held on Tuesday, June 8, 2021 at Gospel Light Baptist Church, 2121 Mooresville Road in Salisbury, officiated by Pastor Anthony Wike. Visitation will be from 1:30 pm until 2:30 pm, followed by a short service in the church auditorium. Interment will follow at Chestnut Hill Cemetery on South Main Street in Salisbury. At all other times, the family will meet and receive friends at the home of Jim and Linda Sides at 150 Henkle Craig Farm Road, Salisbury. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested kindly remember Mrs. Sides with memorials in her honor to Gospel Light Baptist Church, 2121 Mooresville Road, Salisbury, NC 28147.
