To all that knew him, a Chowchilla legend passed away on March 27, 2024. To many he was a hero as a Vietnam Veteran or Merced City Firefighter, but he was an even bigger hero to those who called him Daddy and Papa.
David Frank Akins was born on February 28, 1947 in St Louis, Missouri. He was preceded in death by his parents Orpha M (Vogler) Akins and David L Akins of Ironton Missouri, his brother Rodney Akins of Cottage Hills, Illinois and his son David F Akins Jr of Chowchilla, California.
Dave leaves behind his wife Shirley Ann (Boyett) Akins, his daughters Wendy Olono and husband John, and Chrissy Brown and husband Matt, and his 5 grandkids Logan Hartman, Mason Olono, Hunter Brown, Brayden Olono and Kennedy Brown as well as his sister Tammy Fishbeck of Ironton, Missouri.
He made an impact on many people through his various hobbies which included camping, hunting, fishing, telling fishing stories, riding 3-wheelers and his Harley, building sand rails,fixing up and crashing derby cars, restoring VWs, fixing and trading boats, participating in Chili cook-offs and salsa contests, bbqing, and spending time with family and friends.
