Frieda June Hoffer, a beacon of faith and love in her community, went to sleep in Jesus on July 12, 2025, at the age of 97, in Fresno, California. Born on June 13, 1928, in Chowchilla, California to the late John B. and Carolyn Hoffer, Frieda was the 9th of 11 children. Frieda’s life was a testament to the enduring power of grace, determination, and the strength of family bonds.
Frieda is preceded in death by her parents, her 5 sisters: Dixie Iversen, Lennetta Alexander Atteberry, Sally Muzika, Jo Meyer, Lorene Adams, and her 4 brothers: Bill Hoffer, John B Hoffer, Jr., Jim Hoffer, Robert Hoffer, and Ricard Hoffer.
She leaves behind her sister Delores (Dee) Whitford, number 11, as well as 15 nieces and nephews: Carolyn Brooks, Judy Iversen, Marilyn Simpson, Susan Shortridge, Anne Tedrow, Gary Alexander, Susan Waggonner, Mike Meyer, David Adams, April McNally, Steven Hoffer, Karen Swanson, Lora Heryford, and Jeffrey Franklin, and 22 great-nieces and nephews, to continue her legacy.
She is also survived by her friend, Adam Meza. Meeting late in life, they both took care of each other.
Frieda was a charter member of the Chowchilla Girl Scouts of America. She attended the Adventist school in Chowchilla and later received a BS in Elementary Education from Pacific Union College. She also took the WWII Medical Cadet Corps training. She also received an MA in Elementary School Education and Administration from Loma Linda University. Frieda served as a teacher and administrator in Adventist schools for her entire career, over 47 years, and held teaching credentials in California, Hawaii, and other places. She served for over 22 years as the Associate Director of Education for the Columbia Union Conference. It was here that she was one of the first two individuals to be honored with the Commissioned Ministry of Teaching credential. She was also listed in the 1989-1990 Who’s Who for Women in Private Education. After retiring in 1999, Frieda continued to serve as an interim principal for schools as far away as Alaska, and just down the road at Bakersfield Adventist Academy.
Frieda loved music, travel, and her beloved church in Chowchilla, which her father helped to build. She was an ordained elder for the Seventh-day Adventist Church, preached regularly, and was active in the church’s community services. Her travels took her to Europe, South America, Alaska, Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, and many places in the United States.
As we say farewell to Frieda, we celebrate the life of a woman who was truly loving, faith-filled, and passionate. She walked in the light of God’s love, and now rests awaiting His soon return. Until then, Frieda’s memory will continue to inspire those who were blessed to
know her, and what she taught will continue to live on in the hearts of her family, friends, colleagues, and students. She was a true woman of Christ.
The services will be held on August 12, 2025, at 10:00am at the Chowchilla Seventh-day Adventist Church, at 22308 Road 13. An internment will follow at the Chowchilla District Cemetery.
