Bonny Sue Sunderland

Bonny Sue Hainsworth Sunderland was born July 18,1952 in Washington D.C. and died at home, peacefully surrounded by her family, on April 18, 2026. Bonny was the middle child to Ellen and Bill Hainsworth. She enjoyed family gatherings at their homes in Forest Heights, Oxon Hill and Crofton, MD. Growing up she was a cheerleader, gymnast and took Hawaiian dance. Bonny also enjoyed going out with her many friends. The Hainsworth girls could always be counted on for a good skit, roller skating event, pool party or craft activity.

In January 1977, Bonny married the love of her life, Dean Sunderland. Together they raised Deanie and Missy. Bonny was active in the Crofton Community United Methodist Church where she was the Treasurer. She enjoyed playing cards, especially with the family 500 Card Club. Bonny also loved to sew and was very talented. She frequently made curtains, Halloween costumes and matching pajamas for the whole family.

Bonny attended Towson University, Salisbury University and completed her bachelor’s degree in accounting at the University of Maryland. She worked at First Federal Savings and Loan of Annapolis, the Community Foundation of Salisbury and Pubsco Inc., fully retiring in 2018.

Bonny and Dean moved from Crofton to Salisbury, then to Chesapeake, VA and finally to Clayton, NC, to be near family.

Her best days were in Clayton where she enjoyed watching her grandchildren grow up. She was an expert game player. After Eden left home, Bonny had a special relationship with Ellie and Eric, spending lots of time together. Her sister Barby lived close by and they shopped, sewed and entertained. Having Toni and Deanie and their family just down the street was a true blessing.

Bonny is survived by Deanie and Toni Sunderland and their children Eden, Eric, and Ellie (Tommy) Donnegan. Also, Missy (Joe) Lanham and their children Stevie, Danny, and Kenny. And sisters Barby (Ray) Gill and Becky (Jay) Kirwan and their extended families. Bonny leaves behind many other relatives and close friends.

A Celebration of her life will be held Saturday, April 25, 2026 at 10 AM. McLaurin Funeral Home, Clayton, NC.
