Mable, to her family and friends, passed from here to eternity Sunday morning November 1, 2020. Mable was born in Wake County, NC on August 8, 1931 daughter of the late Vance and Lillie Wells. She spent her early years in North Carolina. She worked as a telephone operator at Southern Bell Telephone Company for many years and in 1950 she married William Robert Britt. They moved to NJ in early 1960 and they settled in Birchwood Village, in Dover, New Jersey.
There, they raised three children Mary, Becky and Bobby. Mable became a co-leader of the village Brownie troop that her daughter attended, Troop 384. Many years later, members of that troop still gather and share memories of this special time in their lives. Mrs. Aurriemma, Marilyn, also was a leader and through this special journey, the Aurriemma family became friends and extended family.
Also, Mable worked as a bus driver for Rockaway Township Schools and as a bookkeeper at Picatinny Arsenal for several years.
After her daughters graduated high school, she, Bill and their son, Bobby, returned to her beloved North Carolina. They settled and opened a business in Clayton, (Raleigh Clock Sales of Clayton). She and Bill operated the business until 2001.
Her hobbies included wood working and collecting elephants. She had a huge assortment that family and friends would gift her. Every time an elephant has it’s stout up, that’s good luck”, she would say.
Shortly after her husband’s death in 2007, Mable relocated for a final time, to New Jersey to be close to her daughter. She moved into Mt. Manor, Lutheran home community housing. She became a part of the family with residents and staff who shared losses and the aging process. Family and friends from North Carolina were loyal and kept in touch via phone and cards. This meant so much to receive a call from a well-wisher just calling to say hello.
After returning to NJ, Mable re-joined Ledgewood Baptist Church. Over the past years, she enjoyed many teas, lunches, dinners, pageants and other times of happiness with her extended family at LBC. She watched her great-grandchildren in the Christmas pageant. This was especially meaningful to her. With the family in New Jersey, she spent most Sundays enjoying the company and conversation.
Each day she and her sister, Margaret Stevens, from NC, would talk. The relationship was one of strong love and dedication. There never was anything more important than that special time shared. They watched over each other, as only sisters can.
Mable was preceded in death by her husband, parents, sister, Myrtle Pruitt and brothers, Robert and Joel Everett Wells, daughter Mary Frances Sloat, and son William Robert Britt, Jr.
Mable is survived by her daughter, Rebecca Louise Pruitt, Becky (Sam) of NJ, daughter in law Betty Britt of NC, sister Margaret Stevens of NC, sister in law, Shirley (Homer) of NC. She also has 8 Grandchildren Robin Britt of NC, Bonnie Stevenson of NJ, Amanda (Kayle) Austin of NC, Deanna (Gary) Sanderford of NC, Owen Pruitt of NJ, Heather (John) Bradford of VA, Diana Sloat ( Butch Bennett) of VA, Jennifer Sloat and Laura Hartman of VA. Additionally, Mable had 11 Great Grandchildren; from Virginia Nathan (Heather) Sloat, Alex and Anna Bradford, Brock Hartman, from North Carolina Braedon and Jaxson Austin, Garrison Sanderford, and from New Jersey Brandon and Kaitlyn Stevenson, Tristan and Rhiannon Pruitt.
Due to COVID, there will be limited services. A graveside burial service is planned in North Carolina in the spring. Mable will be placed next to her beloved husband. At this time family are not receiving guests and arrangements will be updated as they change. In lieu of flowers, Mable requested that donations be made to Caregivers, c/o White Oak Baptist Church, 129 Buffalo Rd., Clayton, NC 27527.
