Frances Holland Spell, daughter of the late Anderson and Rebecca Rich Holland passed away on Thursday, February 18, 2021 at the age of 98. Mrs. Spell was born in Sampson County on May 6, 1922 and graduated from Roseboro High School in 1940 as Salutatorian of her class. She continued her studies in business school at Pineland College in Salemburg.
After her marriage in 1943 to Herbert Eugene Spell, she became bookkeeper and worked for Cumberland County Schools for 30 years until her retirement in 1994. She was very active in her church and civic organizations.
Her retirement led her to extensive travels including Europe, the Holy Land and the US.
Mrs. Spell’s hobbies included cooking and sewing. She made many clothes for her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Quilting was her favorite hobby and occupied much of her time.
She is survived by her son, Myron Spell and his wife, Rebecca of Clayton; daughter, Frankie Costner and her husband, Jack of Garner; one sister, Hazelene Bass of Laurinburg; four grandsons, Adam Spell and wife, Jerica, Ayden Spell, Chris Jackson and wife, Melissa, Matt Jackson and wife, Lauren; 5 great grandchildren, Avery, Ruby, Quinn, Beau and Josie. In addition to her parents, she is also preceded in death by her husband of 35 years, Reverend Herbert Eugene Spell.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, February 22, 2021 at 11:00am at Thanksgiving Baptist Church (6701 NC-42, Selma, NC) followed by a service at 2:00 pm at Harmony Baptist Church (1357 Harmony Church Rd, Clinton, NC). Interment will follow in the Harmony Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Sunday, February 21, 2021 at McLaurin Funeral Home in Clayton from 3:00 until 5:00pm and on Monday, February 22, 2021 at Harmony Baptist Church following the committal service.
