He was born in Russellville, Alabama on June 16,1951 to Laura Joyce Massey Plummer and the late Harold Bates Plummer, Sr.
Bates was a retired Food Service Manager which allowed him to work and meet a wide range of wonderful people. Bates graduated from North Carolina State and participated in the marching band program all four years of college. He loved music of all kinds, especially opera and classical and would often “air conduct” while listening. He loved sailing and was a former member of the Triangle Sailing Club. Being on the water was one of his happy places. Bates also enjoyed gardening of all kinds and previously grew basil for local restaurants in Raleigh. He was a former member of the Master Gardener program and would volunteer his time for phone service to help others with the same passion. When much younger, before the knees stopped him, he was an avid runner competing in many 5k races in different states. He loved animals and nature and being outside no matter how hot it was. Through the years he dabbled in various hobbies just to try new things. He loved his family deeply and devoted much time to the care of his mother the last few years.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife of 19 years, Suzanne Kennedy Plummer; sister Allison Pace and husband Buddy; nephew, Joshua Pace and his wife Danielle; great niece Hayden Pace, Stepson Michael Paige and his wife Dianna, Step daughter Jenny McNamara and her husband Phillip along with their daughters Charlotte and Ruby.
