Kiki was born Myrtle Louise Barber in Moultrie, GA, on June 5, 1960. Named for her great aunt, who was childless, she received the nickname "Kiki" from her foster brother, Hans, who came from Germany to live with the family when she was a baby. Hans was a good father figure for her, because her own father died when she was just 4 years old.
Kiki grew up in Georgia, and after finishing at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, took a job as an Occupational Therapist in Jackson MS. On a summer mission to Australia, she met Bill Vanek at the preparatory camp (Camp Westminster) in Conyers, GA. Bill and Kiki were married the following year at Trinity Baptist Church in Moultrie (year 1987).
After Bill graduated from Clemson University, they moved to Baton Rouge, LA, where all five of their children were born: Timothy James, Matthew Kent, Mark Andrew, Katie Lyn, and Kelsey Denise (years 1989-94). After 8 years in Baton Rouge, they spent 15 years in Wilmington NC, and the past 4 years in Clayton NC. Kiki passed away in a hospital in Raleigh after a minor operation on July 13, 2017, and is now buried in Moultrie, near her mother and father.
She will be missed by so many who loved her.
