

A memorial service will be held at 2:00pm on Friday, September 19, 2025 at McLaurin Funeral Home in Clayton, North Carolina. The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 2:00 pm at the funeral home, prior to the service.
She was born January 3, 1933 in Beaufort, North Carolina to the late Henry Smith and the late Gladys Weeks Smith. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Jarvis Moore Piner II; husband, Raymond Issaac Capps; sister, Mattie Englund; two brothers, Henry Glenn Smith and George Victor Smith.
Mary retired from AT&T after more than 30 years of dedicated service. She was a longtime member of Aversboro Road Baptist Church in Garner, North Carolina, where she found community and spiritual connection. In addition to her professional and church life, Mary gave her time as a volunteer with the Garner Area Ministry, reflecting her commitment to helping others.
Following her retirement, Mary embraced her love of travel and explored many parts of the world. She also enjoyed floral arranging, a creative pursuit that brought beauty and joy to those around her.
She is survived by her son, Lon “Sparky” Piner and wife, Claire of Smyrna; stepson, Richard Capps and wife, Christy of Saraland, AL; stepson, Johnny Ray Capps of Newton, NC; grandson, Christopher Piner of Beaufort; granddaughter, Mary Ann Saunders and husband, Scott of Chesapeake, VA; grandson, Jimmy Paul Piner of Beaufort; grandson, John Patrick Piner and wife, Kalah of Beaufort; grandson, Ryan Capps of Saraland, AL; grandson, Jack Carter of Saraland, AL; granddaughter, Marissa Lambert and husband, Brannon of Raleigh; granddaughter, Autumn Thompson and husband, Michael of San Fransico, CA; 14 great grandchildren and one great, great granddaughter; daughter-in-law, Barbara Piner of Beaufort.
