A celebration of Melvin’s life will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 21, 2025, at McLaurin Funeral Home in Clayton. Family and friends are invited to gather and share memories beginning at 2 p.m., prior to the service.
Born on September 26, 1946, in Johnston County, Melvin was the oldest of six siblings and a beloved son of the late Lassie “Ben” Edward Johnson and Lula Etta “Polly” Bailey Johnson.
Family was the heart of Melvin’s world - he loved his relatives fiercely and unconditionally. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army, spending time stationed in Germany. A skilled craftsman, Melvin worked in construction after his military service and was self-employed for many years until a major heart attack in his 30s led to early retirement.
Despite health challenges, Melvin embraced life with a deep love for his family, especially the little ones. He was affectionately known as “Uncle Melvin” and was a “second Grandpa” to many, and he cherished every moment spent with them.
A passionate sports fan - especially of the Carolina teams - Melvin was a fixture at family sporting events. Whether cheering from the sidelines or from his favorite chair, he rarely missed a game. He took special pride in watching his younger family members play, especially Mickayla’s, Elijah’s, and Ty’s various games and matchups.
Melvin is survived by his son, Melvin Zuni Johnson, and son-in-law, Jason McCraw; his brothers, Bobby (Jan) and Tim (Lois); sister-in-law, Tori; brother-in-law, Ronnie; many loving nieces and nephews; a cherished friend, Kim; and a wide circle of extended family and lifelong friends. He was blessed to be surrounded by family who offered tireless care and support - especially his niece, Michelle, and her mother, Tori - driving him to appointments, preparing meals, picking up medications, and offering the simple gift of time and presence.
Besides scratch-off tickets, one of Melvin’s greatest joys was witnessing children’s excitement during birthdays and Christmas - he lit up at the sight of a child opening a present. He was especially proud of his son’s charitable work, particularly efforts that supported children in need. In honor of that spirit, and in lieu of flowers, the family invites donations to be made in Melvin’s memory to twirltotheworld.org (https://twirltotheworld.org/), to help provide toys to children during the holiday season.
