Susan Pruett Newnam

Susan Pruett Newnam, age 73, passed away at her home in Clayton on Monday, April 21, 2025. She was born on February 21, 1952, and raised in Canton, North Carolina. She was the daughter of the late Robert Claude Pruett and Patsy Kinsland Pruett.

Susan graduated from Appalachian State University with a bachelor’s degree in business administration. She taught business classes at Haywood Community College in the late 70’s and early 80’s. Beyond that, she was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and homemaker.

Susan was a devout Christian and was very involved with her local church. She enjoyed all sorts of crafting and was especially gifted at knitting. She was an expert pianist and played for various churches for many years. She loved reading and was almost always starting or finishing a book. Susan loved her family and especially all her grandchildren. She was a very good listener and went out of her way to hear what her children and grandchildren were doing with their lives.

Per Susan’s wishes, there will be no formal services.

In addition to her parents, Susan is preceded in death by her husband, Barry Lee Newnam.

Susan is survived by her two sons, Robert Pruett Newnam and his wife, Rachel Olazabal Newnam, and their three kids, Wyatt, Jack and Adela; Barry Lee Newnam II and his wife, Misty Lee Newnam, and their two kids, Clint and Grant.
