Born on February 29, 1944, to the late William Alan McLane Jr. and Margaret Parks Ewing, Bill lived a life defined by devotion to his family, unwavering integrity, and a quiet strength that carried through every chapter of his life. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters Sally Longmire and Carolyn Ridgway as well as brother-in-law James J. Butler III (Alicia).
For 55 years, Bill shared a deep and enduring love with his beloved wife, Barbara Butler McLane. Together they built not only a home, but a life rooted in commitment, resilience, laughter, and unconditional love.
In addition to his wife, Bill is survived by his daughters, Shelly and Aimee, his son, Chad; grandsons Nicholas and Alexander (Shaylen); granddaughters Kyleigh, Kaiya, and Anya; great-granddaughter Presley and his brother Mark McLane (Laura). Bill's legacy of love extends to his many nieces and nephews, who will remember him fondly. Nothing mattered more to Bill than his family, and the love he gave them will remain a lasting part of their lives forever.
Bill will be remembered for his quiet strength, discipline, and strong work ethic. He led more by example than by words, earning the respect and admiration of all who knew him.
Bill was a Veteran of the United States Army where he served for 6 years. A gifted builder and craftsman, Bill took great pride in the work of his hands. He owned W.A. McLane Construction Company in Fairmont for 14 years before moving his family to Raleigh, North Carolina, where he established McLane Builders. Even in retirement, Bill continued doing what he loved most, spending his years in Sunset Beach, North Carolina, building, creating, and staying active until 2001.
Bill found his greatest peace outdoors, especially in the mountains and waterways of his beloved West Virginia. He loved camping, fishing, and boating, and cherished any opportunity to spend time on the water with family and friends. He was a devoted Mountaineer fan who rarely missed the chance to cheer on his favorite football and basketball teams. He also had a special love for animals and treasured his pets as loyal and beloved members of the family.
Though his absence leaves an immeasurable void, the lessons he taught, the memories he created, and the love he gave so freely will continue to live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
