

Born on December 22, 1945 in Clearfield, she was the daughter of Harry and Alice (Cleaver) Mathews.
Edith graduated from Curwensville Area High School in 1963, she recently attended her 60th class reunion. Upon graduation, she was employed by G.C. Murphy Five and Dime until she found her life long career at the former Target Sportswear/Bayer Clothing Group where she retired as the HR Manager.
Early in her career, a fellow employee approached her and asked what would be a good gift to get his girl for Valentine's Day. Edye responded "if you were my boyfriend, a haircut". The next day he came to work with a haircut. On October 26, 1968 Edye wed Barry R. Levin in the Grampian Church of God.
Edith was a member of the Glen Richey Primitive Methodist Church where she was the church pianist, for approx. 50 years, was a Sunday School teacher for teens in the 80’s-90’s and was a committee member of Pastor Relations, Auditing Committee, and Trustee Board. Edith was also a member of the Joy of Living Bible Study Group.
After retirement from Bayer Clothing Group, she decided to work as a U.S. Census Taker.
Edye was a volunteer for the American Red Cross and was an instructor for Community CPR and First Aid, First Responder CPR, CPR with AED.
She was a member of the first group of women firefighters at the Glen Richey Fire Department, was an EMT-D First Responder, assisted in the formation of Quick Response Service in the early 90’s, member of the Glen Richey Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary, and an instructor for multiple trainings in the fire company and for Glen Richey.
In the late 80’s-90’s, Edith volunteered with the Clearfield and Curwensville Ambulance.
Edith taught by example, to her children and others, the importance of service to others. She instilled the importance of community and to always give back more than you take.
In her spare time, Edith enjoyed sewing and reading.
Edith is survived by three children, Wendy Visconti (Steven) of Pittsburgh, PA, Pamela D. Cox (Steven) of Wellsville, NY, Marlene R. Levin of Glen Richey, PA; three grandsons, Brian Mathews, Mathew Visconti, and Andrew Cox.
She is also survived by one sister, Roberta ‘Bertie’ Madera of North Carolina and several nieces and nephews.
Edith was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Barry who died on March 21, 2006, two sisters, Tillie McCartney and Janet Hall, and one brother, Ray Mathews.
Friends will be received at the Bennett & Houser Funeral Home, Inc. on Monday, March 18 from 2-4 and 6-9 p.m. and on Tuesday, March 19 from 10-12 p.m.
Funeral services will begin at 12 Noon on Tuesday, in the funeral home, with Rev. Duane Stiner officiating. Interment will follow at the Thompson Cemetery,
