After the hurricanes of October 2024, Cindy, her sisters Yuki and Lily and I picked up the branch strewn lawns of USF piece by piece. We started early in the morning when it was still chilly. Each member of the very assorted, but somewhat unified, team had formed in the wake of the disasters to work cleaning up the campus. Cindy created lively conversation with each member of the team: young and old, gender regardless, Cindy made every person feel special and engaged as we worked through the days. The sun would come out and we'd all be laughing and goofing off more than we picked up twigs, but Cindy just worked hard when it was time to work.

     The first time I met Cindy was at her sister Yuki’s graduation this time last year. Even though we’d just met, she talked to me with the same friendly intensity with which she talked to everyone, asking questions about my travels and telling me about the restaurant we were headed to. Her sister Yuki and I laughed on the phone several times about her getting everyone to chat and smile, from a lonely bar goer in New York City, her birthplace, to an eccentric car salesman in Tampa when Yuki was dealing with a rough situation.

     The honor I have had to know Cindy is unique, and incredibly bittersweet. 

     Cindy and Lily slept over at Yuki's apartment during their post-hurricane weeks of working to return the campus to its usual state. At one point, Cindy and I found ourselves alone looking at a calendar I had featuring various vibrant flowers. In a quiet moment, Cindy leapt into action, telling me which flower she and I and her sister Yuki would be. Though I can't recall the specific month she said, I can still remember the love and tenderness in her voice when she spoke the words "I think my sister is..." and that will never leave me.

     Just as you brought light to everyone in life, you continue to bring so much light to us every day. I love you Cindy.

Cindy was my student at Sickles High School for two years in Human Anatomy and Physiology.  A brilliant young lady who had a great sense of humor and wittiness that complimented her beautiful mind.    My deepest condolences to the family and friends of Cindy.  God bless Cindy as she passes from this life to eternity.   She will be missed.

Cindy is an amazing, beautiful, inspirational, gorgeous, loving, kind, Hilarious, smart, caring, funny, intelligent human. She is my best friend. I love her so much and I always will. She never failed to put a smile on my face. She is literally a bright light that never stops shining and will never stop shining. She brought so much joy in my life more than anyone can imagine. She is my other half. And she always will be. Cindy is such a rare person. Anyone who meets her has experienced real privilege in their life. Because there is no one like Cindy who can just put a smile on someone’s face the way she does. She spoke so highly of her family and all of her siblings of all their great amazing accomplishments is school. Cindy is such an amazing kind hearted human being. She will always be apart of me and be with me. I love you Cindy.

I worked with Cindy almost every day for months last year at Louis Pappas. She always managed to brighten my day, and was always so happy. She was so kind to me and others; I will always remember her dearly.

I took Cindy on my family vacation to North Carolina. My parents were amazed at how much spicy foods she ate and was un phased by. We took so many silly pictures and laughed until our ribs hurt. She was my best friend for so many years. I will forever miss you, Cindy.

Cindy was a student of mine here at Sickles High. I will always remember her as being full of life and smiling.  Prayers of peace for her family!

I am deeply sorry to hear about the loss of beautiful Cindy. My heart goes out to her family during this incredibly difficult time. Please accept my sincerest condolences, Cindy was the best friend a girl could ask for, and I love her. I hope she rests peacefully.
