David Matteson, age 84, of Tarpon Springs, Florida passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 17, 2024, surrounded by loving family. David was born in Youngstown, OH in 1939, one of five children, and relocated to Tarpon Springs as an early teenager, graduating Tarpon Highschool in 1957. He attended Florida Southern College for a BA in English and ultimately graduated from Georgia Tech as a Mechanical Engineer in 1962 with his brother Robert a year behind him. David worked for several prestigious companies including Gulf & Western, Standard Oil, British Petroleum, and Alstom Power. Forever the innovator, he contributed toward the development of numerous patents and new concepts for advanced fuels, power generation, and national defense.
Beyond the accolades of professional success, David was a special soul. Typically the smartest guest of the room, David was stoic in character, yet charming and his thoughts were immeasurably concise and uniquely contrived. His special delivery of distinctive humor was only outmatched by the love and joy for life he shared with others. David was adored by friends and family and held life-long close friendships with those fortunate enough to become acquainted. An avid and skilled sailor, David enjoyed flying small planes, spending time with his family, woodworking, fishing, and watching his beloved daughter ride horses.
David is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Joan Francis Matteson, his daughter Kathryn Ann Sutko, son Jon Paul Matteson, and two grandchildren, Braxton Pierce Sutko and Aria Kay Matteson. He was preceeded in death by his best friend and brother, Robert Matteson, brother Jack Matteson, sisters Sue Matteson and Betsey Bunnell, mother Blanche Matteson and father Elwin A. Matteson.
Though departed from this world, David will live on in our hearts with cherished memories.
