Edward Cairns, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, peacefully entered the presence of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on March 18, 2025, at the age of 94.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 65 years, Pauline Cairns. He is survived by his daughter, Mary Cadle, and her husband, Michael; his son, David Cairns, and his wife, Brenda; his grandchildren, Olivia Rosselli and her husband, Sam, along with their children, Flora, Emelia, and Wesley; Phillip Cadle and his wife, Morgan, with their children, Abigail, Adeline, and Annabell; Grace Cadle; and Matthew Cairns.
Born with a brilliant mind and a gift for logic and mathematics, Ed developed a strong work ethic early in life, beginning with a newspaper route. After high school, he attended Ohio State University, but a battle with scarlet fever forced him to withdraw. Due to a resulting heart murmur, doctors predicted a shortened life expectancy, leading him to forego returning to school. Instead, he applied to Armco Steel Corporation, where he worked his way up to become the Director of Employee Benefits. He was widely respected as a compassionate and kind leader, always willing to listen to those under his care. He retired at the age of 55.
A devoted family man, Ed built a loving and stable home for his wife, Pauline, and their children, Mary and David. He had a deep love for learning and a natural curiosity that led him to explore a variety of interests, including gardening, cooking, interior design, and music. He took classes in upholstery and speed reading, always eager to expand his knowledge. As a young man, he learned tap dancing and played the clarinet in his high school marching band.
Ed met Pauline at a YMCA dance in Middletown, Ohio, an event he helped organize. He later recalled that she was “the most beautiful woman he had ever seen.” From that night on, their love story began, culminating in their marriage on April 11, 1959—a bond that lasted more than six and a half decades.
A devout Christian, Ed dedicated his life to serving Christ and his family. He sang in the church choir and served in various roles over many years. His selfless heart was evident in his dedication as a caregiver, particularly in the last decade of Pauline’s life.
Now reunited with his Creator, Ed is whole and complete, joyfully singing praises on the golden streets of Heaven. He leaves behind a legacy of wisdom, faith, love, and laughter. His life was a blessing to all who knew him, and his memory will continue to inspire and comfort those he leaves behind.
