Elba Irene Mizell Thurman was born on July 30, 1929, in Morriston, Florida, to two amazing parents that she now joins in Heaven, Bryan and Zenobia Mizell. After several brief residences in Florida, Elba eventually settled in the Clearwater/Safety Harbor area where she grew up and eventually graduated from high school in 1947.
In December of 1950, Elba married Robert [Bob] Thurman and so began a life journey that took them from Deland where Bob attended Stetson University to prepare for the ministry. After faithfully serving as a pastor’s wife [and pianist] at several churches, Bob and Elba moved to Jacksonville, Florida after Bob left vocational ministry. It is here where Elba spent over (28) years working at Jacksonville University. Whether it be in the Registrar’s office, the campus library or the Alumni office, Elba served with an inviting countenance and willing spirit to help in any way she could. Ultimately, Bob and Elba found their way back to Deland to retire and be closer to family.
Throughout her life, Elba was known for her welcoming presence and a selflessness care for others. Even in her waning years, she was characterized as a woman of compassion, a curiosity about others and the faithfulness of an authentic friend. She cared deeply for her family and modeled the life a quiet but inspirational person for those closest to her.
Elba is survived by her children, Tim [Zabrina] Thurman, Jon [Cindy] Thurman along with several grandchildren and great grandchildren each of whom brought great joy to her life, be they near or far away. An undeniable faith in Jesus and the comfort of family were the cornerstones upon which Elba lived the foundation of her life.
A private, graveside service will be held for Elba on January 16, 2025 after which she will be interred alongside her husband, her mom and dad and within a peaceful walk of many other family members that preceded her in death.
