

TOWNSEND, George E., died peacefully at home in Clearwater on Tuesday, November 1, 2022, at the age of 101. Born May 23, 1921, to Charles A Townsend and Agnes R Weter, in Brooklyn, NY. He graduated from St. Benedict Parochial School (1935) and Bushwick High School (1939) in Brooklyn and the City College of New York 1943) with a BS Degree in Geology.
During WWII, George enlisted in the War Department Civil Service with the US Army Corp of Engineers in Mt Vernon, NY and New York City. He was assigned to the Army Map Service in Washington DC. He was then reassigned to the Engineer, GHO, Far East Command in Tokyo, Japan, where he remained until 1966, when he was moved to HQ, US Army Pacific in Honolulu, HI until his retirement in 1974
In 1947, He married the love of his life, Edythe K Jacobs in Yonkers, NY, who followed him throughout his career and into their retirement to Clearwater. During their retirement years, George and Edythe traveled extensively in North America, Europe, Asia, Australia and New Zealand. Edythe preceded George in death in 2008 as did his only sibling, Helen G Sheridan. He is survived by four Sheridan Nephews in California.
George was an amateur photographer since childhood and enjoyed digitizing and viewing his extensive lifetime collection of photographs with family and friends. He was also a life member of the Townsend Society of America and an avid participant in their DNA Project. He was an active member of St Michael the Archangel Catholic Church in Clearwater, where a Funeral Mass will be held Monday, Nov.7, 2922 at 10am, followed by entombment with Edythe at Sylvan Abbey Memorial Park
