John Erling Hovland, 76, of Clearwater, Florida, passed away peacefully on October 2, 2025. A devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, successful business owner, cherished brother, and loyal friend, John leaves behind a legacy of love, dedication, and quiet strength.
Born on October 12, 1948, in Chicago, Illinois, to the late Eliane (née Christenson) and Austin Hovland, John’s Midwestern roots shaped the grounded, compassionate man he would become. After graduating high school, he pursued higher education at Carthage College in Kenosha, Wisconsin, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree, a testament to his lifelong value of hard work and learning.
In November 1971, John married the love of his life, Betsy. Together, they began a journey of over five decades, building a life filled with love, family, and adventure. Shortly after their marriage, John and Betsy relocated to Clearwater, Florida, where they took over and operated the family business, The Dunes Motel, on Clearwater Beach. John later established Creative Monogramming, a business that allowed him to pair his entrepreneurial spirit with his meticulous craftsmanship.
An avid boater from a young age, John felt most at home on the water. Whether navigating the shores of Lake Michigan in his youth or cruising the Gulf waters near Clearwater, the sea was his sanctuary. He was a proud former member of the Clearwater Yacht Club and could often be found with a line cast or a hand on the helm, sharing his love for boating with friends and family alike.
Family was the heart of John’s world. He was a devoted husband to Betsy for 54 beautiful years. A proud and loving father to Erik Hovland and Heather Joy, he found immense joy in the accomplishments and happiness of his children. His grandsons, Dylan and Kellen Joy, were the lights of his life, and he carried the memory of his granddaughter Presley Joy and son-in-law Ryan Joy in his heart always. He is also survived by his beloved sister, Christine Hovland, and a wide circle of extended family members and dear friends who were blessed by his presence. He also leaves behind his cherished companion, his beloved dog Ringo, who brought him endless joy and comfort.
John will be remembered for his quiet wisdom, gentle spirit, warm smile, and the way he made those around him feel truly seen and cared for. He lived with integrity, loved deeply, and gave freely. His legacy will live on through the stories told on docks and in dining rooms, through the businesses he built, and most of all, through the love of his family.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in John’s memory to the Alzheimer’s Association, a cause close to his heart.
Fair winds and following seas, John. You will be missed beyond words and loved beyond measure.
