Lulan Everett Gregg Jr was born June 5, 1929 to Lulan and Edna (Scott) Gregg in Muskegon, Michigan along with his sister Elaine and brother Robert. As a young boy he enjoyed skating and sledding with his friends and ice fishing with his mother along the shores of Lake Michigan. A highlight of his youth was traveling to Chicago for the 1933 World Fair.
His father, a store keeper, lost his business during the Great Depression and his family moved to Omar, Michigan in 1944 where they owned and operated hunting cabins. At the age of 15 Lulan left home and joined the Merchant Marines and sailed the Great Lakes.
In 1946, he enlisted in the U.S. Army at the age of 17. He was stationed in Occupied Japan in 1947 and later assigned to the 8067th MASH unit in Korea from July 1950 to Jun 1951. While in the military he earned his GED, took courses in criminal investigation, became an Army CID Agent and later a chief legal clerk for JAG. He achieved the rank of Master Sargent E-7. He was honorably discharged from active duty in 1952 and left the reserves in 1974.
Lulan enjoyed music especially boogie woogie piano, swing and dixieland jazz and a bit of the blues. His love for music led him to meet his true love when he walked into a Detroit nightclub to listen to local musicians and met Elise Ann (Angie) Miscischowski on Valentine’s Day 1953.
On October 2, 1953 Lulan exchanged wedding vows with Angie at Fort Gordon in Augusta, Georgia. They were blessed with four children, three sons, Leslie, Ronald and Michael and one daughter, Tonee Ann. Another blessing for Lulan was his two grandchildren, Michelle and Noah.
After leaving the military he worked for Pinkerton Detective Agency in Detroit, Michigan. Once married and after becoming a father he changed his career to insurance investigator, later becoming an insurance adjuster and eventually a claims supervisor. He was employed by Travelers Insurance Company in Cleveland, Ohio for close to 20 years.
Throughout his life Lulan enjoyed traveling. He enjoyed taking family vacations which included relaxing on the beaches of Florida and Michigan, exposing his children to the history of cities like Washington DC and Ontario, Canada, exploring the caverns in Kentucky, digging for gems in North Carolina, panning for gold in California and hunting for geodes in South Dakota. In his later years he enjoyed trips to Las Vegas, Reno and digging for opals in Nevada.
Lulan was dog lover. He had fond memories of his childhood dog Camel and the family dog Charlotte. He later fell in love with his daughter's dog Baby Madison.
One of the goals he achieved was retiring early at the age of 54 and relocating to Clearwater, Florida with his wife Angie in 1983. In retirement, he found new pleasure in fishing, treasure hunting and serving as the historian for the Army CID Association.
Simply stated, Lulan was a good, hardworking, devoted husband and father. He wanted to share his thirst for knowledge and adventure with his children. In that he succeeded. We love you Dad.
