My sincere condolences to Joyce, Alicia, Allie, Claire; Ari, Fiona and Maddox, and all of Steve's family, friends, and colleagues. I am so sorry I missed the visitation and funeral as I was away visiting family at the time of his passing. He was such a great co-worker at SPC - I will always remember his ready smile and sense of humor! Steve made the long, long program director meetings in the Provost Conference room more enjoyable with his quick wit and sense of humor! I had not seen much of Steve lately as I retired in 2011 - and I was saddened when I did see him to learn that he had been suffering with cancer - however, it clearly did not stop him as he was at the HEC - truly devoted to his profession and students. The very last time I saw Steve was at Floor and Decor in Clearwater with Joyce - some time in May or June - and they were remodeling - so clearly he was very active right up until the time he joined our Lord in heaven - I know we will all miss him here - but I'm sure he's keeping the other angels smiling! Steve was my first clinical instructor for the Respiratory program at Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse, NY.  I will never forget his energy with his long blonde hair and white lab coat flying behind him as he led us down the hallway to our next adventure.  He was a brilliant man and an amazing teacher who clearly touched so many of his students and colleagues over the years.  I had the pleasure of talking with him at the AARC convention in San Antonio a few years back and it was very evident that his passion for teaching and for our profession had remained in his heart.  He truly is a credit to the Respiratory Care profession and will be greatly missed.  At this time I wish to express my heartfelt sympathy to his wife and his entire family.

Dear Joyce and all the Mikles Family. Please accept my deepest condolences. 
I first met Steve back when he was an OJT at Crouse Irving Memorial Hospital. He was one of the most energetic, lively person I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. There are so many things that I can say about Steve. 
I knew him in so many ways. He was first a student, then a peer, and then a therapist under my supervision. 
Steve was the most compassionate dedicated individual that I have ever known. I am so proud to have  know him not only as a therapist, but also as a friend . 
We had many great times together. Even though I was his manager, I felt like I was the student and he was the master. Steve taught all of us about living. His passion for living and being all that you can be was an inspiration to all. 
I had not seen Steve in many a year since he left Syracuse and relocated in Florida. At the last AARC convention in November of this past year, I had the joy of seeing him again. 
Joyce, I have so many wonderful memories of this great man, and the impact he had made on my life, and the life of many here in Upstate NY, that there is not enough space in this note to tell you all that I wish to say. He was a great man. The world has been a better place knowing Stephen Mikles and Heaven has a beautiful angel. Please feel free to contact me.

I just heard of the passing of Steve today. I want to express my heartfelt condolences to the Mikles family. I first met Steve at an open house at the Caruth Center in 1988. I thought I wanted to be a Radiologic  technologist, however, I met Steve Mikles before I could get to the X-ray display .  After a short two hour talk and tour of the respiratory department, I signed up to be a Respiratory Therapist. I didn't even know how to spell respiratory. I thought of Steve many times during my career as a Respiratory Therapist.  I have never met anyone like Steve: he was brilliant, funny and  his finest quality was his ability to make you feel really good about everything after speaking with him. I will miss him greatly. My brother - we were housemates for 2 1/2 years while I was goind to S.U. We shared so many things together, but most of all, we created many memories that will stand the test of time. All of our friends, the numerous parties we had at 830 Ostrom Ave. and the love we shared for the music and concerts can be distilled down to a friendship that lasted until Steve left us. I could write reams of material that highlighted our years together, but the memory of our last conversation summed up  40 years of knowing each other. I called Steve one day to sat hi. He was just going to lay down and take a nap and I said "Steve, I love you man." He said "Richard, I love you, brother." It was the last time we spoke. Those few words will always be with me until we meet again, Steve. You will be missed. May the hand of God rest on your shoulder and show you the way home. My brother, have a great journey.

It was an honor to have Mr Mikles as a teacher as St. Petersburg College.  He taught us the meaning of courage and persistance as well as Respiratory Care.  He will truly be missed. My prayers and thoughts to his family

Steve was one of my mentors, friends and colleagues.  I will always remember his humor, wit, wisdom and incredible energy. He touched so many lives in the best ways possible.  Steve:  I will miss you very much and I love you my friend!

I too knew Steve from our days at West Genny.  He was a very special person.  To paraphrase Warren Zevon - keep him in your heart for awhile.

Steve was a great instructor and I will always remember him saying we had to save the "lil baby chirruns " when we were doing Pediatric and Neonatal courses. His humor and willingness to mentor saved me many a time when I was close to losing my sanity in class ... He will be missed..but I am sure he is taking care of all the "lil chirruns " in heaven..

In the short time, I knew Mr. Mikles, as a freshman in the current RRT program at SPC, I came to admire and respect him for his dedication to his family, the future of respiratory care, and his students.  My condolences and prayers to his family.

I knew Stephen in Syracuse, way back in the long blonde ponytail days of his spirited youth when he was a charismatic “hottie” on the most wanted list of many of the ladies.  Those were the days when everyone went out at night to hear/see and dance to local bands - no one loved music more than Steve.  Steve always wore a generous smile and had infectious laughter and his own brand of wit. He was the only person I knew that would ride his bike through snow in the harsh winter months in Upstate NY and actually enjoy it. He loved the sun and although there was very little of it up north he always managed to be tan while the rest of us looked pale. Other than the hummingbirds that visit our deck I've never seen anyone with as much energy, non stop motion and stamina.  Steve was also a con-artist when it came to seducing you to engage in an outdoor activity.  He once (and only once) convinced us to take what he called a short easy hike that would reward us well with a panoramic view. Steve could be very convincing and (unlike Andy Jones with the bike invitation) we took the bait!  We quickly lost sight of Steve who left us in his dust and caught up with him hours later at the top of what to us seemed like Mt. Everest.  Our tongues were hanging and hearts pounding in our chests and ears.  We found Steve smiling at the top looking refreshed and wondering what took us so long.  I can claim credit for being the catalyst to Joyce and Steve meeting and a witness to their wedding vows.  Together they made an amazing couple in a relationship that has stood the test of time in sickness and in health.  Joyce has always been a loyal supporter behind all of Steve's accomplishments and challenges.  She supported him with love, kindness, faith and great courage.  Steve was gifted and blessed in countless ways throughout his life - he had a “good run” and I'm deeply saddened for him and his lovely wife and family that the finish line came far too soon.  With deepest sympathy and love.

I was deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Steve. What a great person. We became friends through our common passion for running. Sharing the same stomping grounds, we ran into each other on numerous occasions. I will miss his joy for competition and his devotion to training. Rest in peace my dear friend Steve Mikles.

Joyce and family, Steve meant so much to so many. We both have been very lucky to have called him our teacher. Steve was  in our social group of friends way back when he was attending school at Upstate.  He was so smart,  loved music,   so easy going and a lot of fun to be around.  Back then he had long straight blonde hair and was always so physically fit.   He was admired by all  who knew him and he will be greatly missed.

To Joyce and family - Sandy and I are so sorry for the loss of Steve. He was a great friend. We shared many miles, black and tans, and memories together. Stepping on Clearwater high school track will never be the same without him. I will always hear him calling out our splits and cheering me on at Turkey Trot. We will all miss him.

I met Steve through the running community several years ago and always enjoyed swaping stories and discussing workouts.  He would greet you with a smile and always a encouraging word.  My deepest Sympathy to his family, you are in my prayers.

Steve was young, energetic, and truly loved what he was doing. As I have grown in my professional practice of respiratory care I continued to admire Steve's contribution to the profession. I did not know Steve well, but he was one of the first people I met when I started with AARC 30 years ago. We said hello to one another at all of our AARC conferences and he was a reliable presence at all of our meetings. Certainly he will be missed in the respiratory care community. Steve, you were a great friend and respected colleague who will be missed.  I will always have fond memories of our humorous conversations.

Throughout life we are given special treasures.  Steve was one of those treasures as a leader, educator, therapist and friend.  His  thoughtfulness and sense of humor could light up the darkest of rooms.  All of his attributes will be missed but never forgotten.  Steve left us much too soon.  Joyce and your lovely family will always be in my prayers.

I had the good fortune to meet Steve back in 1983. He was my instructor as I began training for a career in respiratory medicine. Steve was an excellent teacher and set high standards for his students. He also taught us, by example, that you can be super smart and still be very cool. Not so many years later Steve became my boss when I began teaching at St. Pete College. He was always supportive and encouraged me to take on new tasks. I recall telling him that I wanted to get rid of some of the outdated material and to introduce some newer topics that were more current. When Steve heard this his face lit up and he grinned like a child that had just received a new bicycle. Steve was always looking ahead, as he was a progressive forward thinker. He took on new challenges on a daily basis and never lost his high energy level. His contributions to the respiratory care profession on a national level were monumental. Steve was my teacher, my boss, my mentor, and my friend. As so many others have already stated, I too will never forget him. My thoughts now are with his beautiful family as they deal with the loss of one of the truly great ones.

As a current student of the SPC Respiratory Therapy program, I think it sufficient to say that my classmates and I will most certainly be better therapists because of Mr. Mikles' incredible instruction.  His passion for this profession was unparalleled.  His gentle nature, quick wit and spirited stories will not soon be forgotten.  Thank you for allowing us to share in your journey and I wish your family much love and peace.

Steve... one of my best friends ever! Watched Steve and his wonderful wife Joyce raise a beautiful family of girls... now the grand kids are coming... He was just such a fantastic  guy, always smiling with a great positive attitude. Our family felt his love. I will miss being able to call him when any SU team was on a roll. No one , I mean no one was more athletic than Steve. He took better care of himself than anyone I have ever known. He asked me once if I wanted to go for a bicycle ride and I figured we were going to ride the trail  around Clearwater... no he wanted to ride to Gainesville and back!! I met Steve at Upstate.  I graduated one year after he did. I remember dropping him off at the airport once when he was on his was to visit you. He was so excited! I have seen him over the years at professional functions in the years since then.  He will be missed.  I am so sorry for your lose.

In my many years being in Tampa I have met many good people, but Steve with that wonderful personality and awesome greeting smile is one of those GREAT people that you want in your life. Steve and I competed for the Grand Masters Awards in the Thanksgiving Turkey Trot.  When he told me about his cancer (in remission at that time), I was no longer his fiercest competitor. I was hopeful when he returned the following year and blasted a sub-20 minute 5K which I was no longer able to do. I was disappointed not to see him in subsequent years. If only he could come back to kick my butt once again.

Sharron and Jim Larson of Clearwater, FL would like to extend our deepest sympathy to the Steve Mikles family.  Even though we were out of the State of Florida the running community notified us of the tragedy.   I have been fighting cancer since 2000 and know what Steve must have gone thru . . . We met Steve decades ago while running track work outs at Clearwater High School.  He was the only guy we knew who could run a track work out in Florida heat and manage to look good doing it.  Steve's infectious smile and positive attitude inspire all of us to live our lives similarily.  He was a fierce competitor but always a true and trusted friend.  All in the running community will truly miss this amazing man.  During some of our particularly hard workouts Steve would comment that the was "seeing Jesus".  May you be comforted by the thought that he is now is his presence.

I am so sorry about Steven. He was my mentor at my first CoARC site visit in Georgia. What a wonderful teacher he was and a barrel of fun. God holds him now and we will always hold him in our hearts.

To Joyce and family, I am so very sorry for your loss.  I will remember Steve's sense of humor and optomistic nature.  I was lucky enough to meet him when I was at HEC Word Processing and continued to count him among my friends -- his endless energy and dedication to his students was amazing to witness.

Dear Joyce and family, Kelly and I were very saddened by the news. We always thought that Steve would find a way to beat this thing. I have many fond memories of the times with Steve at SPC and even the paella at your little house in high point. The whole RT community will miss him.

Mr. Mikles was an amazing teacher and person. There was never a dull moment in his classes he would get side tracked on some story right in the middle of his lecture but we didnt care becuse he always had the funniest stories! I always though it was so funny when Steve would come into check on the students becuse he would show up in his carring his tire and every time he woul dsay "Now I cant stay long" then the next thing you know he had been there an hour just telling stories and making everyone laugh. He touched the lives of so many people, he will truly be missed!

I am sorry for your loss. I was very fortunate to get to know Steve at the track and then even better as he coached me each week.  He gave me inspiration not only during our track workouts but in life, through his battle with this terrible disease.  He has definitely change the way I think as I take each day in a positive manner and treat everyday as a gift!  This is the gift he me!

Dr. Steve Mikles was a truly great mentor and encourager!  I was lifted up every time I saw him, spoke to him, or exchanged e-mail with him.  He had a way of making excellence a reality by living it, defining it, providing examples, measuring it, and encouraging everyone around him that they could be excellent too.  His readiness to walk in my shoes and shine a light on the path ahead of me, encouraging and directing my next steps, lifted me up to be able to believe and become more than I dreamed possible.   I am increadibly grateful for who he helped me to become.  

To Steve's family:  Please know that Steve embodied excellence and showed so many people the way to excellence.  His life was a major contribution to many individuals as well as to the Respiratory Care profession that he loved so much.  My prayers are for your comfort - that you may know that Steve's was a life well lived and that this world is a much better place because of his contributions. Godspeed.

  I remember Steve as endless energy, when I lived in St Pete he was either out biking or planning on biking, as soon as his clinical duties ended. 
 Steve gave me guidance during the time I was developing a Respiratory program here in Jacksonville. An extremely approachable resource person with a true passion for our profession. God Bless him and his family.

I was friends with Stephen when we were both alot younger. Back then he was passionate about going to school to graduate and begin his lifetime career in Respiratory Therapy. He had his daughter Alicia whom he so loved. His passion for running, bike riding, and exercise were well known to anyone who knew him. He loved listening to music and was not shy about dancing. He drove a yellow Subaru station wagon when it was cool to drive a sports car because he got great gas mileage and had room for his bike. He would be the first person to jump into Skaneateles Lake before the snow even melted. He always carried a brush in his back pocket because God forbid his long hair got messy. He loved to eat at King Davids for their falafels and Caroma's for their great Italian food. He always had a smile and an easy going way about him. He had good friends that lasted a lifetime. To share this is my tribute to him today.
My condolences to his wife Joyce and the family. He was taken much too young but he was also blessed with their lifetime of love. When we dry our tears we should rejoice in his passion for life and remember that he left a piece of him in all of us. God Speed Stephen and many prayers for his family.

We knew Steve as a friend and colleague and will forever have wonderful memories of the time we spend together at CoARC (both work and play) and the many talks we had over the years on the phone just to say hello.  He was a true leader and mentor and will be missed by so many.  He has touched us all…  He is at peace and for that we are grateful and we will never forget him.

A great competitor and running buddy.  I'll treasure the memories of our racing together.  I'm proud to have called him a friend.

Dear Family of Steve,
I had the honor to meet Steve and work with him on a project for CoARC. During this time we talked and shared some stories. My son was diagnosed with cancer three years ago and while he has recovered now, Steve always asked me about him. Last year I decided to do a charity ride for my son's hospital and of course I consulted Steve on how I should prepare myself as I had never done any long distance rides. Sure enough he helped me out, and he was the first to know that I did well. I will be riding this Saturday again, and I will be thinking of Steve during the entire 50 miles. Steve will be missed. I wish you all strength and patience.

My deepest condolences to the Mikles family.  When Steve attended RCIA, I felt blessed to be a part of his family's faith journey.  We will miss seeing him at Mass.

I knew Steve through running.  Just like in other areas of his life, he was always enthusiastic and highly driven.  An article once written by Dave Theall described him as "ebullient", which I thought was a perfect description.  That's how I'll remember him.  Rest in peace, Steve.

Dear Joyce and family,
You are in my prayers. Steve and I shared an apartment during the BS program at Upstate. Steve filled that place with music,a lot of laughs, and passion for all he did. Many people remember Steve for his numerous professional accomplishments. I remember him as the originator of air guitar. He just nailed it with his Jim Dandy good looks and rock and roll swagger.

I am so sorry for the loss of your loved one. May memories make you smile and give you the strength to cope with your loss.

I have such great memories of Steve from SPJC.  He made all of us love respiratory with his enthusiasm and excitement for it. He left a huge footprint on this Earth and will be missed by so many.  My deepest sympathies for his family.  May he rest is peace.

Mr. Mikles was such a great teacher. He kept everything exciting. He was also a great guy. I will miss him dearly.

Mr. Mikles was a great teacher and leader.  I really enjoyed being one of his students.  My prayers to his family I pray God give you comfort and strength. Another angel gone to heaven.

Steve has been a constant beacon for us in Respiratory as long as I have been in the field. Dan found me at Morton Plant as a transporter in the 1980s, and sent me to meet Steve. His enthusiasm for the field was undeniable. His faith in me got me to enroll, and helped me get through it all when I wanted to give up. Later, his call got me in the school again to teach alongside them. Working and teaching with them has been like returning to a family.  
The light he brought to Respiratory will continue to shine in all of those he has worked with. God bless you, Steve.

I wanted to wish my heart felt condolences during this sad time for all of you.  In the 30 years of working with Steve, never once did I leave him that he didn't make me smile and laugh.  His mentorship and guidance touched the lives of many students, faculty and administrators over the years. I am lucky to have known him and worked with him for so long.

Steve's passion for teaching and medicine was palpable.  After 22 years, I remember his "near permanent" smile, on a daily basis. Classes were NOT easy, however, he taught me that ALL goals are attainable with hard work and perseverance. I, truly, am a better, stronger person from knowing him.

I can still picture him coming to Morton Plant and Largo hospital to visit our class on clinical days walking down the hall with his front bicycle wheel.
