

Dr. Wendell R. Sheets,86, of Clearwater died Tuesday, April 13, 2010. He was born in Cox’s Mills, WV and came here in 1965 from Glen Burnie, MD. After serving in World War II in the US Army Air Force, he attended and graduated with a BA degree from Glenville State College at Glenville, WV and received his Masters degree and Doctor of Ed. Degree from the University of Maryland in College Park, MD. He also attended John Hopkins University in Baltimore. He is listed in Who’s Who of American Educators. His career in education began as a Business Ed teacher in Anne Arundel Co. schools and Baltimore City Public High Schools in MD. He served on various committees in the Business Ed. Dept. serving as Chairman of the Md. Business Ed. Assoc. and was president of Phi Delta Kappa. In 1965 Dr. Sheets and his family moved to Clearwater where he worked in Pinellas Co. Public Schools serving as Director of Vocational Secondary Ed. and President of Pinellas Co. Supervisor’s Assoc. He also served as Asst. Dean of Academic Affairs of St. Petersburg Junior College and was a charter member of Kappa Delta Eta and served as secretary. He retired in 1989 as Vice President of St. Petersburg Jr. College serving as Facilities Planning and Institutional Services. Dr. Sheets was a devout Christian and member of Skycrest United Methodist Church where he served on many committees, was a certified lay speaker and taught the Sunday School Foundry Class which he thoroughly enjoyed. Surviving is his wife of 66 years, Harolbelle (Betty) Sheets; two children, E. Wavalene Begin of Clearwater and Wendell A. Sheets of Spring Hill, FL. He loved and enjoyed three grandchildren; Jennifer Lounsberry of Clearwater, Angela Smith of Land O’ Lakes, and Corey Sheets of Ft Polk, LA. He was also blessed by a great-granddaughter, Grace Lounsberry of Clearwater, and a great-grandson, Nathaniel Sheets of Brandon, FL. He has one surviving half-sister Yvonne Ellison of Cox’s Mills, WV and two step-sisters, Gladys Burton of Cox’s Mills, WV and Loreda Bailey of Salem, WV. He was preceded in death by his parents Homer and Mary Sheets, step-mother Pearl Sheets and a half-brother Homer R. Sheets, Jr. Visitation will be Sunday, 2:00PM – 5:00PM at the funeral home, 693 S. Belcher Rd, Clearwater and funeral service will be Monday, 11:00AM at Skycrest United Methodist Church, 2045 Drew St, Clearwater with entombment to follow at Sylvan Abbey Memorial Park.
