Charles Edward Tutwiler, Jr., 93, of Winston-Salem, died Friday, January 27, 2012. He was born in Harrisonburg, VA to Charles E and Mable Bowers Tutwiler. The family then moved to Dayton, Ohio where he graduated from high school.
Mr. Tutwiler attended Wittenberg College in Springfield, OH before joining the Army/Air Corp during WWII. He trained in communications, became a captain and served a tour of duty in Europe. Before leaving for Europe, he met his future wife, Martha, in Greensboro. They were married in 1945 and he returned to school, graduating from the engineering program at then North Carolina State College in 1949. He was first employed by the Civil Aeronautics Administration (CAA - now the FAA) and he and Martha travelled the southeast until 1953, when they settled in Winston-Salem, after he started his career as an electronics engineer at Western Electric (later AT &T). He retired from AT&T on May 19, 1984
Mr. Tutwiler was a long time member of Wake Forest Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Martha Jane Dean Tutwiler, and his daughter, Cheryl Tutwiler Benton and her husband, Fred Benton and many loving nieces, nephews and caregivers. He was a loving and caring husband and father, a gentle soul with a gruff exterior.
A funeral service will be held 1:00 p.m. Monday, January 30, 2012 at Wake Forest Baptist Church in Winston-Salem with a graveside service following at Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral service and following the service at the cemetery at the home of his niece and her husband.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice, AARF or any animal rescue organization or Alzheimer’s Association.
