On March 27, 2026, our mother, Doris Smith Truitt, transitioned peacefully. We feel the best way to honor her is to give you a glimpse into the woman she was. As a child and adolescent, she was devoted to Burkhead Methodist Church. She had fond memories of her Aunt Lelia taking her and her sister, Edna, to Myrtle Beach for the first time as teenagers. She carried that youthful joy into adult beach trips where she would run along the water’s edge as far as she could go. Her love of nature traveled from the beach to the mountains where she would drive for miles to see the autumnal changing of the leaves. At home, she connected with the outdoors by digging in the dirt. She cultivated a variety of gardens and flower beds. She strategically placed hummingbird and seed feeders in front of windows so she could lose herself in the simplicity of birdwatching. She would often sit outside for hours just listening to the birds. Her creative nature led her to a lifelong enjoyment of artistic endeavors from tole painting to sewing our handmade dresses to baking sourdough bread and playing Christmas songs on the organ. There were many rich layers and textures to the person she was.
Love you Mom, Sonya and Christa
