The Rev. Dr. Jackson Kent Outlaw, Jr., passed away suddenly on Wednesday, December 24, 2014, at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, due to complications suffered from an accident.
Kent was born in Albemarle, NC on June 29, 1928 a son to the late, Dr. Jackson Kent Outlaw, Sr. and the late Isabel Zurbrick Outlaw. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Leslie Robertson Outlaw and his sister, Isabel Bryan Schulz.
Kent’s education included Albemarle High School, The Citadel, Wake Forest College, The Art’s Student League in New York, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He received his Master of Divinity at Vanderbilt University followed by a Doctorate of Ministry from Drew University. In 2005 he received his Master of Arts in Liberal Studies from University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
Kent was a Methodist Minister with the Western North Carolina Conference from 1960. He retired in 1991 and continued his education, enjoyed writing, travelling and serving as a Chaplain with the Listening Post at North Carolina School of the Arts. He traveled extensively in his life with his wife Leslie enjoying his love of France where he served in the military with the US Army.
He is survived by a three children, Jackson Kent Outlaw, III of Wendell, NC, Robert Leslie Outlaw and wife, Janice Scales-Outlaw of Jamestown, NC, and Julia Gray Outlaw and husband, Vincent O’Boyle of Advance, NC and a granddaughter, Anna Marie Outlaw of Wendell, NC.
A funeral service will be held 11 a.m., Monday, December 29th at Clemmons United Methodist Church with Rev. Paula Northrup officiating. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery in Albemarle.
In lieu of flowers the family has requested that all memorial contributions be made to the Listening Post, Co-operative Campus Ministry of UNC, School of the Arts, C/O David Riffe, Treasurer,1244 Arbor Road #138, Winston-Salem, NC 27104.
