

Dr. Horatio ("Ray") Phillips Van Cleve, III, passed away at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home on September 21, 2011. He was 92 years old. Dr. Van Cleve was born August 13, 1919 in Cranford, NJ to Horatio Phillips Van Cleve, II, and Leslie Allen Van Cleve. At the age of 11, he moved to Minneapolis, MN. He later earned a medical degree from the University of Minnesota, interned at Minneapolis General Hospital, and was a General Medicine resident at Swedish Hospital also in Minneapolis. After serving in the Army, he returned to Minneapolis to practice medicine. He continued to practice medicine in Dodge Center, MN, where he also served as mayor. In 1950, Dr. Van Cleve moved to Austin, MN, where he became a partner in the Austin Medical Center, a multi-specialty clinic, which is now a part of the Mayo Clinic. He served several terms on the Austin School Board, was a delegate to the Minnesota State Medical Association, serving as chairman of the Minnesota State Insurance Committee and the Medical Education Committee. After 25 years in practice in Austin, he became board certified in Family Medicine and moved to Winston-Salem, NC to help establish the Department of Family Medicine at Bowman Gray School of Medicine of Wake Forest University, where he worked until his retirement. Dr. Van Cleve served several terms on the Board of Trustees of Forsyth Technical Community College, and was active in Parkway United Church of Christ. In retirement, between golf games, he became an accomplished woodworker and built many pieces of furniture for and treasured by his family and friends. He was also a member of Forsyth Country Club, Parkway United Church of Christ and the Winston-Salem Rose Society. He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Elizabeth, a sister, Leslie Van Cleve, two brothers, John Van Cleve and Allen Van Cleve. Dr. Van Cleve is survived by his wife of 48 years, Patricia Claire Van Cleve of Winston-Salem, son Edward Allen Van Cleve of Austin, MN, daughter Elizabeth Leslie Van Cleve of Salem, OR, son Michael Howard Bramel (Nanette Hatzes) of Gettysburg, PA, son Scott David Bramel of Mankato, MN, daughter Nancy Bramel Zipter (Clifford Zipter) of Summerville, SC, and daughter Christine Bramel McFadden (Jeffrey McFadden) of Winston-Salem. He was adored and will be fondly remembered by his grandchildren Eric Andrew Zipter, Ryan John Zipter and Kyle Allen Zipter of Summerville, SC, Andrew Robert McFadden and Allison Christine McFadden of Winston-Salem, Corinne Betteridge Higgs, and his great grand children, Maida Higgs and Stephen Higgs of Gettysburg, PA. Dr. Van Cleve loved his family and his family loved him. They will be forever grateful for the kindness and compassion of the doctors, nurses and staff of Hospice and Palliative Care Center. Funeral Services will be held at Parkway United Church of Christ, 2151 Silas Creek Parkway, Winston-Salem, at 10:30A.M. Saturday, October 1, followed by a reception at the church.
