Janet Sue Berry Hoffman

5 mars 19542 juin 2021

Janet Sue Berry Hoffman passed away on June 2, 2021 at the age of 67 in Clemmons, North Carolina. Janet was a dedicated wife, loving mother, adoring grandmother, loyal sister and friend and she will be greatly missed.

Janet was born in Memphis, Tennessee on March 5, 1954 to the late Zenas and Bernice (Campbell) Berry. On April 24, 1973, she married Paul Joseph Hoffman, Jr. Janet dedicated eight years of her life to being a Navy wife. She stood by Paul dutifully as he served his country. Janet and Paul had their first two children, Heather and Jeffrey, before she went to work as a flight attendant with Piedmont Airlines. Janet then went on to study at Guilford Technical Community College. While enrolled, Janet and Paul had their youngest son, Scott. She went on to receive her Associate Degree in Commercial Art and Advertising Design even though she had a young child. Janet worked as a freelance graphic designer focusing on creating newsletters and printed materials for her church. Later, Janet would work as a substitute teacher in the Winston-Salem Forsyth County School System.

Janet loved playing piano and harmonica. She had the rare talent of playing the piano by ear, which enabled her to play songs after only hearing the music once. She was a very talented seamstress. As a Navy wife, she made all her own clothes as well as her family’s. When she could, Janet loved visiting the beaches of North and South Carolina, walking along the shore collecting shark teeth and shells. She most enjoyed her time with her family.

She leaves behind her husband of 48 years, Paul Joseph Hoffman, Jr.; children, Heather (Eric) South, Jeffrey Hoffman (Elena Nichols), and Scott Hoffman; grandchildren, Caitlin and Gavin South, Ammon, Halle, and Jaxon Hoffman, Emily Hernandez, Ethan Nichols, and Elizabeth Nichols; siblings, Jean (John) Mauro, Nancy (Mac) Musgrove, Barbara Rees, Joseph Berry, and Tammy (Mike) Bentley; sister-in-law, Lindsay Berry; many nieces and nephews; life-long friend, Lezlie DeGrand; and many loved ones and friends. Sadly, on June 5, 2021, Janet's brother, Robert Zenas Berry, passed away in Florida at the age of 56. Janet and her baby brother Robbie are together, again.

The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, June 15, 2021 at 10am at Frank Vogler & Sons Funeral Home in Clemmons. The family will receive friends for a visitation beginning at 9am. Janet will be laid to rest at Salisbury National Cemetery Annex at 2pm.

The family would like to say a special thank you to the staff at Brookstone of Clemmons for their compassion and care they showed Janet. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations in Janet’s honor to give back to the staff at Brookstone of Clemmons: https://gofund.me/52d09380

Dear Hoffman Family,

I send my love and condolences to you all. Janet is an amazing, kind, loving, Christlike and selfless woman who had a big impact in my life. She was one of my young women leaders in my teenage years. I always enjoyed talking with her and participating in her Sunday lessons. She taught with such grace and always brought the spirit into the room. She motivated and encouraged me as I navigated my teenage years and prepared for adulthood. She exemplified the woman that I wanted to be. I am grateful for her. She will always hold a special place in my heart.❤

Love, Julie Hiatt Turner:)

Janet was such a good friend through jr. high and high school. I spent many hours at her house and her parents were so good to me. I loved to hear her play the piano and knowing that she did it all by ear amazed me. We spent lots of time together as cheerleaders for the Hawks. I know how much she loved her family and know how much she will be missed.
Rest in peace, my dear friend.

Heather, Paul, Jeff, and Scott - I was so sorry to hear of Janet's illness and passing. The picture shared here on the obituary is exactly how I remember her. I have so many fond memories of Heather and spending time with all of you - PHS, church activities, a trip to Hilton Head, and mostly just hanging out at each other's houses. In many ways, it feels like yesterday. Janet (and all of you) was always so much fun and made me feel right at home and like I was a part of the family. My heart is heavy for you and you will all be in my thoughts and prayers in the coming days.
With much love,

I know it is a difficult time for your family.
A loved one’s passing is hard no matter the circumstances.

We knew Janet mostly through our children’s friendship. She always showed kindness and caring for the youth. Please know that our family gained so much from her efforts.

Janet was so talented and creative. She was delighted and willing to share her abilities with others.

Jim and I will keep your family in our thoughts and prayers as you heal.

There was nothing Janet could not do. She was the sweetest and kindest girl in high school and touched many lives with her honesty and generosity. I am so grateful to have found her again through Paul and to have kept in touch with her for as long as we could. Paul, my friend, you have an angel watching over you and wonderful memories to keep her with you. You and you family are in my prayers,
