

Jesse Shumate Davis Jr. (Shumate), 81, passed away Wednesday, June 25, 2015 at Kate B Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston Salem. Shumate graduated from NC State in 1952 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Industry. In addition to his passion for horses and cows he had a passion for vegetable farming and surf fishing. He served in the US Army from 1957-1959, played baseball on the M.D.I.S.L. military team at Camp Irving, California, winning the 1958 M.D.I. S. L baseball championship. Shumate was employed with RJ Reynolds Tobacco Co. as Production Operation Manager. He retired from RJR Tobaccoville with 29 years of service in 1989. A life well lived best describes this extraordinary man. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jesse Shumate Davis, Sr. and Ruth Crosby Wall Davis. Surviving to cherish his memories are his wife, Judy Marshall Davis, sons, Jesse Shumate Davis III, (Jesse) and John Marshall Davis, Jesse’s wife Kathryn, two grandchildren, Natalie Elizabeth and Austyn Rose Davis; four brothers, William W. Davis, James W. Davis, his wife Carole, Joseph H. Davis his wife Vickie and Thomas C. Davis, his wife Ann. The family will receive friends on Saturday, June 27, 2015 from 5:00 pm until 9:00 pm at Frank Vogler and Sons on Reynolda Road. Mr. Davis will lie in state on Sunday from 9:00 am until 1:00pm. The funeral service will be on Sunday, June 28, 2015 at 2:00pm in the Frank Vogler and Sons Reynolda Road Chapel, with a reception to follow in the reception hall.
