

He was born March 1,1966 in Winston-Salem, NC, a son to the late, James G. White and Hilda Day Johnson White.
of humor, aDue to his struggle with drug addiction, which began at age thirteen, John did not complete high school, yet received his GED at Forsyth Community college in Winston-Salem, NC, making the highest score on the test that anyone had ever made at that time. He was a lifelong learner and a constant pursuer of knowledge in many endeavors. He learned computer programming on his own outside of any formal classroom and worked as a gifted and sought after computer programmer and software developer in the oil industry after moving to Houston to be close to his daughter. He kept current with the ever changing computer technologies and took on the most challenging projects. He enjoyed taking many classes in the Houston Community College system, including precalculus and physics, and was currently enrolled in an electronics class. John also had many interests and hobbies and enjoyed learning new skills, most recently skateboarding and wood working, and prior to that windsurfing and kite boarding. He loved creating and inventing, especially when it involved wheels or energy efficiency. John particularly enjoyed his nephews because he at last found someone his own age (at least in spirit) to play with.
John courageously battled addiction daily for more than thirty years, but had many years of sobriety. In those years he was very active in Narcotics Anonymous, where he was able to encourage and impact many others. Despite his personal struggles, he remained extremely kind, caring, generous and willing to help others. He had a gift for having fun and a rare and ready sense nd he brought much joy to those around him
He is survived by his daughter, Kristen White of Atlanta; mother, Hilda Johnson White Scarborough of Winston-Salem; his close friend and the mother of his daughter, Jennifer White Wolf and her husband Sid, of Atlanta; three siblings, Emmie White Bostian Curry and her husband, David of Winston-Salem, James Ganell White, Jr. and his wife, Cheryl of Atlanta, and Nissa Scott and her husband, Robert of Atlanta; step brother, Robert Scarborough, Jr. and his wife, Beth of Covington, GA and step sister, Terry Scarborough and her husband, John Savarese of Wilton, CT; seven nieces and nephews, Drew Bostian and Alexander Curry, Ashton, Rob, Molly, and Will Scott, and Chapman Scarborough; and a host of extended family and friends.
A memorial service will be held 10 am, Tuesday, May 5th in the Chapel at First Baptist Church, 501 W 5th Street, Winston-Salem, NC. The family will receive friends following the service in the Brown Memorial Room at the church. A private inurnment will be held at a later date.
