

Lawrence F. Shepherd, Jr., age 80, of Charlotte, N.C. passed away on Veteran’s Day, November 11, 2012. Born on October 9, 1932 to Lawrence Fitzhugh and Vivian Glenn Shepherd in Hamlet, N.C., Mr. Shepherd lived most of his life in Winston-Salem, N.C.
He was an active member of First Baptist Church and the Enablers Sunday School class. He was graduated from R.J. Reynolds High School, where he was Vice President of his junior and senior classes, and a member of the football and basketball teams. Upon graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy to serve his country as an aviation electrician during the Korean War. He then attended Appalachian State Teachers College, graduating in 1963 with a BS in Health and Physical education. One of his most treasured memories was serving as the manager of a Winston-Salem/Forsyth County park during the summer when it was first integrated. During his career, he was a teacher and coach at Southwest High and Junior High School, owned the local Cheerwine distributorship, managed a Hauser Rentals Store, worked in the print shop at McLean Trucking Company and Calvary Baptist Church, and worked at Lowe’s. Upon retirement, he became a full-time grandparent.
Mr. Shepherd was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Mary Motsinger Shepherd, his parents and his brother William Glenn “Bill” Shepherd. He is survived by his daughter, Jean Shepherd Zoutewelle, and three grandchildren, Austen Elizabeth, Andrew Shepherd “Shep” and John Preher “J.P.” Zoutewelle, all of Charlotte, NC; and a host of cousins in Durham, NC and elsewhere.
A memorial service for Mr. Shepherd will be held on Saturday, November 24, at 2:00 pm at Frank Vogler and Sons, 2951 Reynolda Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27106, with a visitation following.
