
Lela Gatewood Wingo Hotchkiss Passed: August 3, 2011 Ms. Lela Gatewood Wingo Hotchkiss, 91, of Winston-Salem passed away on Wednesday, August 3, 2011. She was born in Stephens Co., GA to Russell Quinten and Beulah Thomas Gatewood. She was a devout member of Immanuel-New Eden Moravian Church. She was extremely active in the church serving as church secretary, choir member, and Sunday school teacher. She attended services faithfully until a period of declining health. Ms. Hotchkiss was a talented artist; she played many instruments and painted numerous paintings. She was also a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of The American Legion and the Georgia Taylor ballroom dance club. Lela retired after 43 years of service with the federal government. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her 2nd husband, Joseph P. Hotchkiss; 1st husband, Edgar Wingo; son, Thomas A. Wingo; and 7 siblings, Ruth, Amelia, Douglas, Hazel, John, Orpha, and Horace. Those left to cherish her memory include her sisters, Irma Gatewood Goldberg and Amy G. Parrish; grandchildren, Danny Wingo (wife, Ellen), Deanna Eddinger (husband, Van), and Laura Wingo; six great grandchildren; and one great great grandchild; nephews and nieces, J. F. Farley, Jr. (son, Joseph and his wife Sandra; their son, Jason), Timothy and Mary Ann Peeples, Paul Peeples, Ray Parrish (wife, Karen; son, Jackson; daughter, Katie Lee), Deborah Goldberg Koerner (husband, David; son, Jacob Benjamin), Rachel Gatewood Cooley (husband, Brian; children, Johnathon, Nathan, Hannah, and Sarah), Eric Gatewood, and Jimmy Gatewood; and sister-in-law, Polly Gatewood. Lela's sister, Irma Gatewood Goldberg, was especially devoted to taking care of her for 14.5 years; 12.5 of those were in her own home. Irma's daughter, Deborah Goldberg Koerner and husband David and nephew, J. F. Farley, Jr. had been vitally helpful in taking care of Lela. The family extends many thanks to the staff of Reynolda Park Assisted Living for the care given to Lela over the past 2 years. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, August 6, 2011, 11:00 a.m., at Immanuel-New Eden Moravian Church with the Rev. Cheryl G. Cottingham officiating.
