Born in Ogdensburg, NY, on January 16, 1938, to Louis Clive and Elizabeth Bordine Stoakley. After relocating to W-S, NC Lou graduated from Northwest High School in 1956, where he played basketball and football. He earned a Bachelor’s degree from High Point College and a MBA from Appalachian State University.
In 1958, Lou married Julia, a union he often called the best decision of his life. Together they raised three daughters.
Lou’s career was defined by service. After two years in the National Guard, he was appointed a Reserve Commissioned Officer in 1963. He later transferred to the 11th Special Forces Green Berets (Airborne), where he served as a Captain and A-Team Commander, completing 58 parachute jumps in the U.S. and abroad.
In 1964, he joined the Winston-Salem Police Department as a patrolman and retired as a Lieutenant after 25 years. During his tenure, he was wounded in the line of duty in 1970; he carried over 50 shotgun pellets in his face, head, and back for the rest of his life.
Following his police career, Lou pursued his passion for flying. He held a commercial pilot’s license with multi-engine and instrument ratings, flying for Piedmont Commuter and US Air Express before finishing his career as a corporate pilot at Smith Reynolds Airport.
He is survived by his daughters: Lou Ann Stoakley, Lori Barr (Todd) and Lisa McSwain (Trey).
He is also survived by five grandchildren: Drew Lael, Daniel Lael, Evan Barr, Kailey McSwain, and Ryan McSwain; and one special great-grandchild, Oliver Lael.
Lou loved being outdoors and loved animals. He cherished the many special dogs (and cats) he had throughout the years. His faithful and beloved dog, Fuzzy, remains with his daughter Lou Ann.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, April 25, at Hillsdale United Methodist Church in Advance. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. Casual dress is welcomed.
