PFAFFTOWN-Margaret Yvonne East Scharling passed away on February 19, 2012. Von was born on June 7, 1920, in Okolona, Mississippi. She grew up in La Grange, Georgia, moving to New Jersey as a young woman to pursue a secretarial career. There she met and married the love of her life, John Henry “Jack” Scharling, and raised four sons. She worked for many years in hospital admissions; in the Boy’s Division of the local YMCA; as a high school library assistant; and as an administrative assistant in the school system. In 1988, she retired from her job as Assistant to the Superintendent of Schools in Essex County, New Jersey, and moved to Winston-Salem to be closer to her family.
In retirement, Von enjoyed reading, traveling, and, especially, volunteering. She was a faithful member of Shallowford Presbyterian Church, where she worked in the office and the library and helped with fellowship activities. She volunteered for many years with Meals on Wheels. She greatly enjoyed her association with the Auxiliary of Forsyth Medical Center, with whom she volunteered for 22 years as a patient transporter and a greeter.
Von persevered through all the circumstances of her life. She worked at every task she undertook with dedication and determination. She loved her family, was always interested in their lives, and tried to help them in any way she could.
Von was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Jack, and grandson, Christopher (CJ). She is survived by her sons: Henry Edwin “Harry” Scharling, II and his wife, Barbara, of Landrum, SC; John Henry “Jack” Scharling, Jr. and his wife, Patricia, of Sylva, NC; Robert Carter “Bob” Scharling and his wife, Sue, of Holden Beach, NC; and Eric Stuart Scharling and his wife, Janet, of Lewisville, NC. She also leaves behind many beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She will be greatly missed by her family and her friends.
