Winston-Salem- Mrs. Mary Elsie Duckett Elliott, 92, died at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, on November 1, 2011. Funeral services will be held at 11 AM, Friday, November 11, 2011 at Frank Vogler & Sons Reynolda Chapel with Pastor Steve Pegram officiating. Interment will follow in Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends and relatives during a reception at the funeral home after the interment.
Mrs. Elliott was one of eight children born in Summer Haven, Buncombe County, North Carolina to William E. and Amanda Lovin Duckett. During elementary school she skipped the second grade due to her academic achievements and graduated from Swannanoa High School at the age of sixteen. She was the only one of her siblings who was not able to attend college as at the time of her graduation our country was in the midst of the Great Depression and her first priority was that of contributing to her family so she went to work at Beacon Manufacturing Co.
She met James B. Elliott in Swannanoa and married him in 1939. Together they were a unit. Wherever you saw one you saw the other. They became charter members of Pinebrook County Country Club and built the first home on the south side of the then new golf course backing to the 4th hole. They spent years as avid golfers. She was an active member with the North West High School PTA and the Forsyth Lady Lion’s Club serving both groups as President. She was active in Forest Hill Baptist Church where she served as a church hostess. She and her husband signed mortgage documents to help build Forest Hill Baptist Church. Her family will remember many wonderful annual vacations at Holden Beach, her love of flowers and growing tomatoes, and her enjoyment of watching the birds eat from the many “squirrel” feeders in her yard.
She is survived by her daughters, Kay (Warren) Burk of Viera, FL and Betty Thomerson of Winston-Salem; Kay’s child and spouse, Lisa (Robert) Tharpe Burke of Huber Heights, OH; Betty’s children and spouses, Krista (Hal) Chassereau of Ft. Mill, SC and Kevin (Sandy) Thomerson of Winston-Salem; great-grandchildren, Laura and Lesley Burke, Macy and Tanner Chassereau, Emma Thomerson and Gavin Crawford; sister, Ruby D. Edwards, of Swannanoa; and numerous nieces and nephews, and extended family.
The family would like to thank the Layton Family, Sarah, Terry, Jon and Andrea for their caring and supportive assistance to Mrs. Elliott and her family during her final years.
In lieu of flowers the family asks the memorial contributions be made to Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103, Forest Hill Baptist Church, 402 E.
