Frank H. Maris passed away on Wednesday, April 22, 2026. He was born on July 16, 1941, to Walter Maris and Nancy Sambrook Maris.
Frank proudly served as a Lieutenant in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War. He earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in economics from the University of Pennsylvania and Purdue University. On October 5, 1969, he married his beloved wife, Phyllis, with whom he shared a devoted and loving partnership.
Frank began his career at the Cleveland Growth Association and later worked as an intervention specialist in the Shaker Heights High School. He was deeply engaged in life’s intellectual and creative pursuits, with a passion for the outdoors and camping, reading and writing, painting, poetry, and mathematics. A student of Buddhist philosophy and meditation, he approached life with curiosity, mindfulness, and compassion.
Above all, Frank was devoted to his family—a gentle soul, a thoughtful presence, a deeply present father, a loving partner, and a truly great listener.
He is survived by his loving wife, Phyllis Maris; his daughter, Lisa Maris-Shaab (Ali Alamisi); his son, David Maris (Sarah Braat); his cherished grandchildren, Elijah Maris, Mona Shaab, and Basma Shaab; and his sister, Beth Gruet.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, David Saunderson and Stephen Maris; and his brother-in-law, Paul Gruet.
