I was a frequent bridge partner of Jack's for many years, and bridge was an important part of his life.  Nowadays I find myself thinking of him often.  He had a hundred pithy sayings, often linked to show music.  If the final contract was two hearts, he would invariably say "two hearts that beat as one..."   If he suspected you had bid too much he would frequently put the dummy down with the comment "down one is good bridge" (even though its usually not).

Jack was much loved by all who knew him in the bridge community, and I miss him.  May he rest in peace...

Dear Jeremy and Eric and families,
  I was very saddened to learn about your dear father's death.  I zoomed his funeral from Jerusalem, and was touched by the heart-felt comments by family and a friend.  He would have liked the brief and  sincere ceremony.
  Yonny Shapiro was a very special life-long friend, three months younger than I.  His family lived five doors away from my family's home on Blanche.  His and my parents, Joe and Janet Merlin, were best of friends.  My mother and Miriam Shapiro were stalwart leaders of Pioneer Women, as were their daughters in the next generation.   Every Monday night, for many years, my father and Uriah Shapiro played serious poker with friends.
  Yonny and I sometimes walked home together from Roosevelt Junior High.  He was very smart.  I lugged a load of books every day to do homework. Yonny never carried a book home.  As we all know, he had a remarkable intellect.
  Your mother was one of my sister's best friends.  Your father was a lucky man to marry Felicia.  She understood him well.  Although they had some different interests, except for bridge,  they were devoted to each other all their married years.  
  I will miss Jack Yonny Shapiro.  May his memory be for a blessing.

P.S.  I continue to be connected to your family.  Eric, I'm still taking the daily low-dose medication, that you prescribed years ago after a colonoscopy- to take for life.

Jack and I spent a lot of time together during the years we played together as bridge partners... not only at the bridge table, but also driving to and from the games, and having dinner together between sessions (always one martini, never two).  I wish I could remember more of his sayings, but I think his son, Eric, remembered a very special one in his remarks.  "Just be yourself", Jack would say.  "Everyone else is already taken."  That captures Jack's personality nicely.   


I have nothing but fond and wonderful memories of Yonny and our days together at Heights High.  We had a group of wonderful friends including Alex Lipson {we called him Avchie), Laury Robinson {nobody called him Larry in those days}, Gidone Medini, and many more dear ones.  But your dad was always the leader,- the one with the best brain, the best ideas, the core of our group. It was a time in my life that always brings warm feelings to my  heart whenever I think about it, and about your dad,  And it always will.  Marty Arsham

In addition to Yonny and I playing piano duets, he was my teacher  when I was 18 and had a summer job at the Shapiro/Dannhauser business, Domestic Loan. (It actually lasted a year.) He was extraordinarily patient and kind, and I was always grateful for that.  My job included driving his father, Uriah, to the office.  My mother, Esther, was especially close to Yonny's mother, Miriam, her sister.



Although it’s  impossible to encapsulate a lifetime in a few brief paragraphs, after reading about Jack’s history, we came away with the clear sense that he was a man who  plunged into the world  with intensity . He committed himself wholeheartedly to those he loved  and the subjects he cared about (and our guess is that he expected the same standards of excellence  from those around him?)  We see the fruits of Felicia & Jack’s keen focus,  in their son Eric’s beautiful blend of intelligence and  compassion, as well as it’s expression  in the talented, kind family that he and Jane have  created together.  But surely, the strongest suit in Jack’s  hand  was living to see the blossoming of his  grandchildren and the birth of  a great grandchild!   Isn’t that an enviable coda to  a long and well lived life!  

My Name is Ida and I was giving the opportunity to help take care of Mr Jack in his last days 
He was a very nice man and I am sad to see him go ;But he is no longer in pain 
He miss his wife Phylicia ,He would ask for her every time I would be with him . 
It was a blessing to have help him and his sons in his last days. I  pray that I did a Great Job helping him and that God is proud of me .
Mr Jack; he gave me a nick name .
He would say “ Hi ida sweet as apple cider” 😢 
He will be miss
