

Michael Jay Salkind, 87, passed away on February 6, 2026. Between 1990 and 2003, he built the Ohio Aerospace Institute (0AI) into a global leader in industry-university-government technology collaboration.
Born in New York City, Michael attended Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute where he received bachelors and PhD degrees in engineering. After serving in the US Army (captain), he worked for the United Technology Corp. in Connecticut where he was Chief of Structures and Materials for the Sikorsky Aircraft Division. He served in Washington, D.C. as Chief of Structures for NASA and Director of Aerospace Sciences for the Airforce Office of Scientific Research. He was adjunct faculty member for Trinity College (CT), University of Maryland, and the Johns Hopkins University.
In 1990, Michael came to Cleveland to start up OAI. During his 13-year tenure, OAI attracted more than $250 million in funding for technology and education collaborations. More than 50 companies were involved in collaborative teams, which included NASA, the Air Force, and Ohio universities. At the request of the Ohio Department of Development, he created the SMART consortium to improve STEM education in under-resourced school districts, resulting in increased student participation. He published more than 40 articles and a book entitled Applications of Composite Materials. In 2002 he received the Cleveland Technical Societies Council of Leadership award.
After retiring from OAI in 2003, Michael continued to work as Principal of Indus International, facilitating marketing by US companies in India. He served on the boards of Citizens’ Academy, Diversity Center (formerly NCCJ, Cleveland Council on World Affairs, and Corporate Sustainability Network, and was a member of the Union Club, the 50 Club, and the Cosmos Club of Washington, DC.
On a personal level, Miichael’s greatest joy was interacting with people. He had a passion for conversation and getting to know people and their stories. He was always ready with a joke or reminiscence. He was a loyal friend to many.
Michael and his wife, Carol, had a loving marriage for over 35 years. He is survived by Carol; children Michael Jr., Betsy, Jonathan, and Joshua; Marcus Swailes; his wife’s children, David and Michael Gill; and five grandchildren.
