Very sorry to hear about Michael's passing. I remember both twins fondly from Millikin days, you guys were always making me laugh. My condolences to Michael's family.

Memories of Michael Shafran:  My Wonderful Twin Brother
12-14-49 through 11-2-12

Born the same date, 8 minutes apart, sharing the placenta and the loving warm environment of our mother, Vivian.  Michael had the privilege of being first born, getting the best name and getting the first dibs on nutrients and all of the other benefits of being first born, being my "older" brother.  Why he became an attorney and I became a doctor is a different story.  His devotion to justice and his ability to argue on any issue and win were unsurpassed.  He, in fact, convinced me that we played checkers inside the womb, and because he was a phenomenal lawyer, he actually convinced me to this date that he won.  In the early years of growing up together with my soul-mate and loving brother, Michael, half of my physical and spiritual being, sharing, competing for love and attention, we rejoice in his memory.  In fact, recalling what may have triggered my devotion to gastroenterology, Michael and myself fingerprinted the wall with poo (human waste), which in my subconscious most likely inspired me to become a gastrointestinal specialist.  The sharing of so many memories, the dressing alike (mom sometime when we were around 45 or 50, began to realize that a green sweater for Michael or a red sweater for me would be better than both of us dressing exactly alike).  

Then brother Norman came to the scene approximately 2 years later, someone for Michael and me to torment and gang-up on, eventually turning out to be the best, brightest, and most successful of all of us.  Some of our late, departed uncles referred to us as Mike, Ike, and "Jr.," never remembering that Norman had a name.

Then in elementary school, the great fun and humor in confusing teachers, switching classrooms, confusing our identity amongst friends, sharing girlfriends, even fooling some of our closest relatives in not being able to tell which was Michael and which was Ira.  Then later in junior high school, growing up with all sorts of wonderful people of a variety of backgrounds, including Orthodox Jews, Italians, Lebanese, passionate about collecting butterflies together in the severance estate fields, stamp and coin collections, and the observance of the wonderment of nature and the simplicity of the outdoors.  I have fond memories sled riding with Grampa Cohen, a role model and a great inventor who actually built us a sled, go-cart, and a variety of other phenomenal inventions.  Grampa Cohen and our father, Sanford, teaching us honor, dignity, respect, tolerance for others, love of God, and passion for the simple joy of family and the pure passion for a simple life, and of course, hard work.

Later in high school, Michael developed an obsession with his beautiful hair, combing his hair, in fact observed while driving to be looking in the mirror combing his hair instead of looking straight ahead, always drawing to his attention the best looking girls with his charm and his phenomenal gift of gab and delivery, which made him our "front man."  Then to Ohio State University, sharing the same dorms, apartments, cars, switching dates with girlfriends, he was a true player extraordinaire, as a manager of rock bands, the organizer.  Then to law school in Ada, Ohio, with marriage to Leslie, the birth of Michelle and Eric, and then an illustrative career in law with phenomenal success and adoration by those he helped.  Then the true hero, Jennifer, coming to his life, the inspiration, the strength, and the source of great energy and vitality, as well as a wonderful child, Tyler, a wonderful prodigy child in the Jewish tradition, an intelligent, resourceful and phenomenal human being.

The great strength, patience, and parenting from our Mom (Vivian) and Dad (Sanford), giving us unconditional love, guidance, and belief in God and our faith.  Now, on this date, November 4th, his loving, charming, handsome, and brave soul rests in the kingdom of God in heaven, with all of the loved ones who preceded him.  His strength and courage for those of us who gather here in his honor will never be forgotten.

I just heard today that Michael has passed away. I've known Michael since we were first in class together in 2nd grade.  Michael was a big part of my life growing up. My condolences to the whole family including Ira, Norman, and his Mom and Dad, Vivian and Sanford.

He was my lifeblood, my soulmate ,my wombmate with uncanny and often extrasensory experiences that only twins can share. His love for life, his devotion to his family and his spirituality were indescribable. The loss of my twin brother leaves a large part of my being on earth but brings me closer to the inevitable destiny of sharing life in heaven when god calls me and I join him and grandpa Cohen....maybe hunting for butterflies, fishing, sled riding, making go carts, going down Cain Park as spirits, and always together imparting passion for the joys of life,always embedded in the spirit and souls we have loved and known.Michael I will never be able to recover from your leaving me so quick, but I am sure I will fully recover when we are together with Abe Cohen and other loving departed souls who have been taken from our midst,
