With profound sadness we share the passing of Rabbi Milton Baer Rube, 99 years old on August 14, 2024. He served the Cleveland community for 66 years. Born on June 18, 1925 in Sighet, Romania. He was the cherished son of Selma (Yammer) and Isadore Rub. Milton came to America through Ellis Island as a baby with his rebbe grandfather and many cousins. The family settled in Brownsville, New York. As a child Milton attended Yeshiva Chaim Berlin under the tutelage of Rav Yitzchak Hutner. He continued his education at Brooklyn College where he played basketball for the Brooklyn Bridges and graduated with a Bachelors of Science in physics. He then went on to attend The Jewish Theological Seminary. He loved that his renowned professors Mordechai Kaplan, Abraham Heshel, Louis Ginsberg amongst many would attend his sermons while at JTS. He graduated with the distinction of receiving the highest award – Talmudic Scholar. A master of many ancient languages he was called upon to help the Carmelite Monastery to decipher ancient texts. His humility and sense of humor followed all his days. After a short stint as a civilian chaplain at an Air Force base in California, he was sent to The Heights Temple in Cleveland, Ohio, where he fell in love with Bernice and the congregation fell in love with him. After a few years in Butler, PA and Evansville, IN, Milton and Bernice returned to Cleveland in 1961 as founder of the Young People’s Congregation at Heights Temple. In 1975, he founded Congregation BethAynu, “Our House,” with adoring friends who became family. In his later years, he was asked to join The Park Synagogue, as their Rabbi-in-Residence. Through his career he was called upon to deliver invocations and prayers for Presidents of the United States, Popes, and other dignitaries. An only child, he was very close to all of his cousins who lived across the United States and in Israel, visiting them often. He appreciated the friendships he made along his life from his earliest years at Chaim Berlin and until the day he died. To him, those friends became family.
Milton and Bernice, truly devoted partners in life, were married for almost 70 years. Loving father of Teri (Curt) Hochberg, Joel Rube, Miriam Rube (Rafael LaTorre), and Steven (Laura) Rube; devoted grandfather of Sara (Scott) King, Douglas Hochberg, Jared Rube, Kady Rube, Jacob Latorre, Reuben Latorre, Isaac Rube, and Farrah Rube; cherished Great Zayde of Grayson King, Chase King, and Hayden King; beloved cousin to many.
