Norma Estelle Glassman Platt

PLATT NORMA ESTELLE PLATT (nee Glassman), a teacher who loved the arts and literature, died January 10, 2015, at age 94. Mrs. Platt was a preschool teacher in the first Cleveland Head Start program. She also taught at other nursery schools and worked as substitute teacher. After retiring from teaching, she was employed for many years as a receptionist at a women's health clinic. Following her husband's death, she and her son-in-law took over management of his business, the Industrial Emergency Clinic, which provided treatment for those injured in the workplace. A serious Scrabble player, Mrs. Platt also enjoyed reading, movies, attending educational lectures, and supporting local theater. She was part of a play-reading group, and in more recent years, enjoyed participating in her book club at Wiggins Place. She was a resident of Montefiore for the past year. Born in Hartford, Connecticut, Mrs. Platt majored in English and was active in student theater at The Ohio State University, where she met her husband, Daniel. After they married, he left to serve in the Army during WW II, and she returned to Hartford. Reunited after his service, they settled in Cleveland, where they remained. In her early years in Cleveland, Mrs. Platt enjoyed performing as a puppeteer at Cain Park. Mrs. Platt was predeceased by her husband of 40 years, Dr. Daniel E. Platt. She is survived by her children Susan (Gary) Herwald of Shaker Heights and Halli Platt of East Grand Rapids, Michigan; grandchildren Margi Herwald Zitelli (Matt Zitelli) of Shaker Heights, Deanna Berkowitz and Isaac Berkowitz of East Grand Rapids, Michigan; and great-grandchildren Devin and Alexa Zitelli. Arrangements by Berkowitz-Kumin-Bookatz. Private services, with interment at Mt. Olive Cemetery. No visitation.
