Rita (née Estrin) Shtull was born in Brooklyn, NY, in 1931. She attended local public schools, Brooklyn College, and Herzliyah Hebrew College (NY). She later earned a Master’s Degree in Education at Case Western Reserve University (Cleveland).
In 1951, Rita married Jacob Shtull, a JTS rabbinical student, and they spent the first few years of their marriage in London, Ontario, Canada.
After moving to Cleveland, she pursued a career in Hebrew and Jewish education in a variety of settings. She founded the Hebrew school at Congregation Shaarey Tikvah (then known as Mayfield Temple); taught Hebrew language at Cleveland Heights High School (where she also served briefly as 10th grade principal); and was principal at Solomon Schechter Day School.
Hebrew education, synagogue, and Jewish family life were Rita‘s passions. She worked full-time while raising four children. In her retirement, Rita volunteered at Menorah Park Center for the Aging. In her final years she lived at the Mary Schwartz Summit in Seattle, Washington.
Rita is surviving by her four children and their partners: Kiva (Penny Patterson), Simcha (Dan Bridge), Dina (Steve Leber), Ora (Henri Talerman); 13 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Donations in Rita’s memory may be made to the Rabbi Jacob and Rita Shtull Education Fund at Shaarey Tikvah, or the charity of your choice.
