Robert Alan Stern, known as ‘Bob’ to all who knew him, passed away peacefully in the early afternoon of May 1, 2024, surrounded and supported by his family at his home in Orange Village, Ohio, at the age of 77.
Bob is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Sophia, his two children, David (Virginia) and Rebecca, his sisters, Carol and Kathryn, and his grandson, Jacob.
Bob was born on May 13, 1946 in New York City to Hubert and Margaret Stern. After an early childhood in New York, Bob and his family moved to Cleveland where he graduated from Cleveland Heights High School in 1964. Bob then graduated from Cleveland State University with a B.A. in political science and communications. Bob met Sophia in 1970, and they married on April 22, 1972.
Bob spent his career working in radio and television, initially at Channel 3 as a reporter, before moving into ad sales. He spent nearly 8 years with Regional Reps Corp., and another 12 years at WCPN-WVIZ/PBS Ideastream as Director of Corporate Support.
Bob was a devoted member of Temple Emanu El, serving as Temple President from 2005 to 2009, where he oversaw the building of a new synagogue and the transition of the congregation from University Heights to Orange Village.
Bob is remembered as a caring husband, deeply loving and supportive father, and a loyal friend. He was an avid reader, always with a book in hand. He loved the arts, frequenting Cleveland’s museums and art shows, Playhouse Square, and Severance Hall. He loved listening to a variety of music, from Billy Joel to Beethoven. He was a passionate sports fan, reveling in the successes of the Cavs and Cleveland Baseball team, and suffering, as we all have, through the debacle that is the Cleveland Browns. He enjoyed playing in the Beachwood Men’s Softball League, grilling steaks and burgers, riding roller coasters at Cedar Point, making open-faced sandwiches, and sharing poker night with his buddies.
Services will be held Friday May 3 at 11 a.m. at the Temple Emanu El, 4545 Brainard Rd., Orange Village. Interment Hillcrest Memorial Park.
Family will receive friends on Sunday, May 5, from 1-5pm and Monday, May 6, from 3pm-6pm at 4019 East Ash Lane, Orange Village, OH 44122. If you wish to honor Bob’s life, contributions
to Temple Emanu El (www.teecleve.org) or Hospice of Western Reserve (www. 9hospicewr.org) are welcomed.
