

Sidney J. Shiffman, 98, formerly of New Hartford, NY, and Brooklyn, NY, died on October 29, 2022, in the comfort of Hospice Care at the Willensky Residence, Menorah Park, in Beachwood, OH. He was surrounded by loved ones. He was born to Lucie (Klein) and Benjamin Shiffman on September 5, 1924. Sid was predeceased by his partner of 44 years, Doris Rudolph. He was also predeceased by his former wife of 25 years, Maxine Shiffman, the mother of his children.
Sid served during WWII in the United States Army Air Corps, the precursor to the US Air Force, as a Cryptographic Technician. He was a sergeant in the 305th Fighter Wing, stationed in Tunisia and Italy.
Thanks to the GI Bill, Sidney graduated from NYU and Brooklyn Law School. He practiced family law in New York City for 20 years. In his second career, he was an Administrative Law Judge for the Department of Motor Vehicles in Upstate NY serving Oneida and surrounding counties. Sid enjoyed cooking, traveling and driving a stick-shift into his 90s. He was an active member of Temple Emanu-El in Utica, NY. When his children were young, he took them bicycle riding all throughout Brooklyn, and went cabin camping and hiking each summer. Sid bought his first motorcycle when he was in his 50s. He is survived by his children RitaMarie (Thomas) Guthrie, Naomi Shiffman, and David (Karen) Shiffman, his grandchildren Benjamin (Sheena) Guthrie, Daniel (Amanda Strauss) Guthrie, Delia Guthrie, Hannah Shiffman, Nate Shiffman, Vonya Shiffman, Devorah Shiffman, Sam Shiffman, and Lucie Shiffman, and his great-grandchildren Beatrice, Rebecca, Liana, Maia, and Jacob. He is also survived by his sister Harriet Rabinowitz of Albany, NY, her 4 daughters and their families. Services for Family Only will be held Monday October 31, 2022, at Mt. Olive Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the residence of Mr. & Mrs. David Shiffman 2625 Deptford Dr. Beachwood. Monday and Tuesday 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM and Wednesday 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Freedom Service Dogs of America, the Rabbi’s Discretionary Fund at Temple Emanu-El in Utica, NY, or Planned Parenthood of Greater Ohio.
