

SUZANNE ARNOLD (nee Rhodes), age 75, was born to parents Harry and Matilda Rhodes on Apr. 12, 1941 in Cleveland, OH and died Feb. 27, 2017 in Mayfield Hts., OH. In 1964 Sue earned her Bachelor’s Degree from Cleveland College of Western Reserve University, majoring in Comprehensive Science (biology, chemistry and physics), essentially pre-med also earning a secondary school teaching certificate. Sue began taking courses in 1964 at The Cleveland College of Jewish Studies (now Siegal College at CWRU), there being greatly influenced by her teachers. Sue was a science teacher, tutor and substitute teacher for many years while her three sons were growing up. She returned to CWRU majoring in Library Science with a specialization in medicine in 1974, and earned her Master’s Degree in Library Science in 1976. In the 1980’s, Sue was The Soviet Jewish Identity Specialist at the Bureau of Jewish Education setting up programs to integrate the new émigrés into the Cleveland Jewish community. Sue also taught English-As-A-Second Language to the émigré population for over 10 years. Sue’s life as an educator included teaching at religious schools beginning in 1964. Sue taught for 50 years at Anshe Chesed – Fairmount Temple and recently taught Adult Education at Temple Emanu El. In February, 2008 Sue became a part-time librarian at Park Synagogue East. In recognition of her dedication Sue was awarded a Ratner Fellowship from the Bureau of Jewish Education in 1990 which enabled her to study at Yad VaShem in Jerusalem. Following her studies Sue had been teaching Holocaust Studies, especially literature, and was twice awarded the Lillian Sugarman Teaching Award from the Cleveland College of Jewish Studies. Sue is a past president of Friends of the Library at Siegal College, a past president of the Medical Library Association of Northeast Ohio and a former Board Member and Chair of the Library Committee of Fairmount Temple. She was a pastoral care volunteer at South Pointe Hospital. Sue was a docent at the Maltz Museum and a volunteer Shabbat Leader at The Greens of Lyndhurst. She also recently taught Tai Chi with her husband Nate at Montefore’s Dementia Unit. Sue and her husband, Nate, had been married for almost 56 years and have three sons: Seth, Aaron “Smokey” (aka Andy – Spouse: Maryanne Price) and Jon (Spouse: Margie (nee Rothenberg). She has two grandsons, Brandon and Ryan and a brother Marc (Spouse: Doris). Sue and Nate loved to travel and had been to Israel 14 times where they often studied in Jerusalem and have volunteered at Engliyada in Beit Shean. Sue and Nate are members of Anshe Chesed-Fairmount Temple of Beachwood and Kehillat Kol Ha-Neshama in Jerusalem. Funeral services will be held at 1 PM Thursday, March 2 at Anshe Chesed Fairmount Temple, 23737 Fairmount Blvd., Beachwood. Burial will follow at Mayfield Cemetery. The family will receive friends THURSDAY FOLLOWING BURIAL UNTIL 9 PM, FRIDAY 1–4 PM, SATURDAY 7–9 PM AND SUNDAY FROM 1–4 AND 7–9 PM at the Arnold residence, 25010 Hazelmere Rd., Beachwood.
