

VERA VOGELSANG-COOMBS, age 66, died February 3, 2016. Beloved wife of Steven Coombs; devoted mother of Karen Deborah Coombs of NYC, David Hamilton Coombs of China and Ethan James (Maddie) Coombs of Chicago; dear sister of the late Philippe Vogelsang and sister-in-law of the Douglas Hamilton Coombs; cherished cousin. Services will be held at BERKOWITZ-KUMIN-BOOKATZ MEMORIAL CHAPEL, 1985 S. TAYLOR RD., CLEVELAND HTS. on Sunday, February 7 at 2 PM. Interment will take place in Lake View Cemetery. She was a recognized expert in areas of mayoral and city council leadership, city management, performance measurement, Ohio government, change management, administrative ethics, public personnel management, strategic planning and democratic governance; and WHEREAS, Dr. Vera Vogelsang-Coombs, served as Dean of the College of Graduate Studies between July 1, 2008 and June 30, 2010. Before her appointment, she was the director of the Master of Public Administration Program at the Maxine Goodman Levin College of Urban Affairs of Cleveland State University. She was also the director of the Leadership Programs at the Levin College of Urban Affairs at Cleveland State University; and WHEREAS, Dr. Vera Vogelsang-Coombs, prior to joining CSU, was the Minnesota State Training Manager and worked in partnership with 132 state agencies to develop programs and administer policies for 39,000 state employees. In 1991, she was president of the National Association of Government Training and Development Directors, which was a professional association affiliated with the Council of State Governments; and WHEREAS, Dr. Vera Vogelsang-Coombs, was a faculty member and founding director of the Master of Arts Program in Public Administration at Hamline University in St. Paul, Minnesota, between 1982 and 1988. While at Hamline, she founded the Minnesota Center for Women in Government. Each year the Center awards the Susan B. Anthony Award to an outstanding Minnesota leader and the Gladys S. Brooks Scholarship to an outstanding woman interested in enrolling in Hamline University's MPA program. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of Cuyahoga County, Ohio, hereby commends the exemplary life of Dr. Vera Vogelsang-Coombs and truly acknowledges and appreciates her significant contribution to the success of this newly established Council. Dr. Vera Vogelsang-Coombs' dedication and expertise will continue to be valued by the Council of Cuyahoga County for years to come. To the family of Dr. Vera Vogelsang-Coombs, we know your loss is deep, and your sorrow is great, but we want you to know that we share in your sorrow, but more importantly, we recognize that this loss is Heaven's Gain.
