Arthur attended primary school in the small county that he grew up in called Lowndes County in Dutch Ben Alabama. He was introduced to the Lord as a small child and had a very spiritual upbringing. He often told stories of the work he did on the family’s farm, how one pigs named Rossie was his friends until they had to eat him, the early mornings that were spent working for the family in the fields before school and all the love he received growing up. Once both his grandparents passed away he moved to Ohio and reunited with his mother, step father and many younger siblings.
Arthur was not afraid of hard work and once in Ohio worked as a bumper plater for chrome plating of cars. He briefly married Carol and there were no children to that union. He later married Diane Hunter and from that union was one child, Monica. Upon Diane’s death he remarried Cynthia Dike and spent the rest of his life with her. Art and Cyndi enjoyed doing many things together including going to concerts and listening to live bands, going to church together at Olivet Institutional Baptist Church where he was baptized and became a member, they enjoyed traveling and most importantly spending time with family members.
Art was such a kind spirit. He would help almost anyone, sometimes the family would scold him for being so helpful to those that would never return the sentiment. Art would not mind and would say that was his way of giving back! He and his younger sister, Annie were the last of nine children alive and he spoke with her daily. They often reminisced on things from their childhood in Dutch Ben and cracked us all up in laughter. He really loved to laugh, he would always tell some sort of funny joke or not so funny joke, but it kept us laughing.
The last few decades of his life he was self-employed, he hauled and repaired pallets. All his grandchildren knew about those pallets! He would take his grandson with him to haul pallets as a young boy and told him to always find a way to work for every dollar you get, there are no free rides in this world. He would make him work helping with the pallets when he asked for a couple of dollars. He taught him that money is not given it is earned. To know Art and spend any length of time with him was to love him, his spirit, his great personality and his kindness. He will truly be missed, but he will never be forgotten.
Arthur was proceeded in death by his parents John and Serviller, five brothers: Johnnie, Lee, Cephus, Emmanuel and Sam, two sisters: Jessie and Thelma.
Arthur leaves to mourn his loving and devoted wife of forty seven years, Cyndi, his best friend and sister Annie, his favorite daughter Monica (Billy), his number one grandson Tom, his two princesses (granddaughters) Faith and MonicaJoy, his two rambunctious great-grandsons Ayden and Josiah, several nieces and nephews that he loved and cherished so very much and a host of extended family and friends that meant the world to him.
