Clarence Hammonds entered this life on Thursday, September 18, 1930 in St. Charles, Virginia. He was the sixth child of A.Y. Hammonds and Margaret Lemons. Both parents; four brothers Allen, John Earl, Winford, and Eddie; three sisters Jeanette, Hazel, and Ann Archiball all preceded him in death.
Clarence spent most of his childhood and received his early education in St. Charles, Virginia. He then relocated to Cleveland, Ohio.
In 1950 he wed Phyllis Adelle Wilson and to this union three children were born, Eric, Iris “Niecey”, and Mark. Phyllis, Niecey and Mark all preceded him in death.
Clarence worked as a Cleveland Sanitation worker for 30 years. Upon his retirement from the city he worked as a chef for the Marriott Corporation for 15 years before retiring.
He enjoyed fishing, and cooking. He was an avid walker, and one of his turnaround points on his walk was Motorcars Dealership in Cleveland Heights. This was a total distance of 5 miles round trip from his home. He walked it so often that the owner of the dealership offered him and he accepted a part time job. In his younger years he enjoyed baseball and was an excellent player of the game. In his later years he attended The Golden Age Center at 16600 Lakeshore Blvd, where he met a new group of friends. He enjoyed painting by numbers. In fact, he became so skilled at it that all of his children and grandchildren have two or more paintings hanging in their homes.
Clarence loved and enjoyed his grandchildren very much. When asked if they could visit, Phyllis would always say “Ask Clarence” because he would be responsible for taking care of them.
On Wednesday, August 11, 2021, Clarence departed this life. He leaves to cherish fond memories: his son, Eric (Pat); six adoring grandchildren, Curtis, Candace (Donald), Blake, Marliece (David), Courtney (Michael), and Morgan; eleven great-grandchildren; four additional daughters-in-law, Mary, Brenda, Beverly and Heather; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends
