Jewell was born December 12, 1927, in Cleveland, Ohio. She was the daughter of the late James H. and Ellen Moore and sister to the late James Moore Jr. and Betty Killum. She departed this life, Thursday, November 16, 2023.
Jewell attended Cleveland Public System and after graduating from Glenville High School she worked as a nurse’s aide at Mt. Sinai Hospital until she married.
She married her childhood sweetheart Alfred E. Barclay Sr. (deceased) and to this union three children were born, Alfred Barclay Jr., Denise Buttram, and Rochelle Baldwin (deceased).
Jewell worked as a crossing guard serving her community as a safety guard for Forest Hill Parkway for over 35 years. She also assisted as a lunch aid. She greeted the children by name and encouraged them to do well in school. She also purchased gloves and gave them to the children to keep them warm – they were part of her extended family. Her nurturing spirit made her a beloved mother figure and by simply offering a comforting hug, she enriched the lives of countless children.
She accepted Christ at a very early age and was a faithful member of Emmanuel Baptist Church, attending Sunday service until her health declined in 2019. She loved the Lord and shared her kindness and love towards all that knew her.
Jewell embraced life with a spirit that touched the hearts of everyone she encountered. Her love for family was the purpose of her existence, and she approached every day dedicated to nurturing the bonds that held them together. Whether through a comforting embrace, a listening ear, or a shared laugh, she created a home filled with love, laughter, and a sense of belonging.
She never met a stranger. She was a magnet, people were drawn to her genuine interest in people, her understanding and compassion made her a cherished confidante and friend.
Jewell was a remarkable woman who stood at just 4'11" in stature but she had a giant heart filled with love, kindness and compassion. She leaves behind a legacy of warmth, kindness, and unwavering support for her family, friends, and all who were fortunate enough to cross her path.
She was small but she was mighty.
As we say farewell to Jewell, mommy, mom, Mrs. Barclay, Aunt Jewell, and the name she cherished most - Nana, let us remember and celebrate a life well-lived.
She leaves to mourn her passing and cherish her memory: her loving son and daughter, Alfred Barclay Jr (Tommie) Denise Buttram (David), son-in-law Greg Baldwin (Lisa); grandchildren, Alfred Barclay III (Elan), David Buttram Jr., Myra Buttram, Marva Buttram (Brandon), Brandon Baldwin (Lanasia); great-grandchildren, Dorian and Diamond Jackson, Aaron and Taylor Barclay, Kamryn Baldwin; nieces, Debera Douglas, Denean Barclay, Rachel Haynes, Mary Ellen Killum, Dorrlyn Harris; nephews, Larry, Michael, and Jerome Barclay, Wayne Preston, James Moore Jr. god-daughter, Kimberly Smith, a host of other relatives, the 112th street family and friends.
